bought a used ranger tug - just noticed on my phone this weekend it said WI FI connection available - and it was for the boat! (but had a password) - is that coming off the radio - gps - ? did the old owner forget to cancel his subscription ? when he remembers to cancel will i lose my gps? thank pat

It could also be the garmin. The gpsmap has wifi for downloading, active captain, etc. check each system for the signal

Did you get this resolved? On your garmin chart plotter pick Info/Garmin ActiveCaptain. If you get the ActiveCaptain options, pick Menu/Wifi Setup. You can toggle WiFi on and off plus change the password here.
My Garmin WiFi doesn’t seem to work so I have been playing around in this section a bunch. I also bought a SD memory card to enable more ActiveCaptain options that drops into the bottom right corner of the chart plotter.

CGW - not yet - thanks i will give it a try - ...in the meantime am i supposed to buy a subscription to keep my garmin etc working? i don't know the current password ..will it let me change it? thanks pat

Please note that I am definitely not an expert (I’ve had me RT 31 for 3 weeks)… but you should be able to easily change the password with minimum 8 letters/numbers under info/ActiveCaptain/wifi setup/change password.
I’m not really sure about subscriptions for the maps. My assumption is that the garmin chartplotter came with a set that you don’t need to pay for yearly but don’t really know that.
Anybody?

I had to ask Garmin to contact the previous owner to remove the chartplotter from their online Garmin account before I could add it to mine. It’s a bit of a process, but Garmin tech support is pretty good.

You do not need a subscription to keep the Garmin working. It's just like any other computer. It has hardware, and software. You should check that the Garmin software is up to date, but it will likely work fine as-is. It just might work better with more current software. Sometimes it works worse, like when Garmin made "upgrades" that messed up the fuel use calculations. But folks on this website will usually have a workaround.

Charts are a different story. First, you should determine what charts you have. The gpsmap comes with a pretty basic set of charts. It doesn't have the details, or functionality of the "add on" chips. Garmin makes their own, but others are compatible with the plotter. Most will work after the subscription expires, they just won't have all the features and won't be continually updated.
