Window cleaning

What's good for removing salt water crust from the windshield and side windows without hurting the windows themselves or the paint around them?
I wash down with fresh water at the end of every day but the salt deposits, especially in the corners, are beginning to spread.

I like Salt Away. It has a dispenser that screws onto a garden hose, then just turn the dial and spray away.

I agree with Brad. Salt Away is quite amazing, although expensive. We've come in after taking water over the bow with salt spray everywhere - a rinse with Salt Away and the dried on salt is gone. I have no connection with the company. In fact, I'm hoping the West Marine version of Salt Away that I bought on sale works as well when my Salt Away is gone.

Yep - Salt-Away over a rain-X base followed with a squeege - only takes minutes and restores clear windows. I use it on everything on the boat: Boat trailer, hardware, etc. Don't forget your hull where the bumpers rest - it saves a lot of salt rash. Cheap maintenance.

Another shout out for Salt-Away. I use it after every trip and my 2012 gelcoat looks like new. The one thing I absolutely hate is the poor quality hose sprayer they sell so I upgraded to this one:

I always used salt-away for years to flush my outboards using the pathetic but convenient attachment they sold. I then discovered the magic of using this stuff to spray over the complete boat after returning from a trip. I've been using an Ortho garden sprayer on the end of a hose with great success. Unfortunately I believe the model that I have has now been discontinued, presumably replaced by something new and improved [and with a higher profit margin]. I've found great success with a 2% solution. These sprayers seem to be set in terms of tablespoons per US gallon [life is so much simpler in the metric system!] and so a setting at 5 works fine for me. I always spray the boat over with water afterward and then just leave it to dry naturally.

One of my main issues with the “official” Salt Away mixer nozzle is that the solution becomes more and more diluted as you spray. Another nozzle that was recommended to me by someone at the Roche Harbor rendezvous (I forget who it was, maybe he will see this post) is the HFT. It is sold as a “car wash nozzle” but he swears by it for applying Salt Away. It has a number of different spray settings for different surfaces and distances. I haven’t yet had personal experience with it but I just ordered one on Amazon for about $20 and I believe Harbor Freight has it even cheaper. Google for “hft car wash nozzle” and you will get a number of different buying options.

Hi Mike,
The sprayer is designed to measure in either Tablespoons or teaspoons per gallon. to get a mix of approx 1:500 I use the teaspoon setting (this is done by adding a small adapter that is built into the unit) and setting the dial between 1.5 and 2.
