Has anyone here installed or used a wireless engine cutoff switch?

The lanyard type seems like it would be useless on a boat with an enclosed helm area because the lanyard is not long enough to reach the cockpit for line or fender handling. So, you would have to un-clip the lanyard making the cutoff useless.

I am considering getting a Fell Marine MOB+ wireless engine cutoff switch.

Other brands are available, but this one looks good to me.

If you do have one, where did you install it?

Have not installed one, but read the install instructions and it seems pretty easy. It is my understanding that with an enclosed helm a cutoff switch is not required. Do you often run your engine while outside?

On my previous boats, I would often have to operate the boat myself. So, I would have to leave the helm for short periods to handle fenders, lines, or the anchor. I would always shift to neutral when doing this, but leave the engines running so I would not lose time restarting, or take the risk of the engines not starting. I wanted to minimize the chance of the wind or current moving the boat to a bad place. On my previous boats, the lanyard was long enough to allow most of this, but that won't be the case on the R-27. If I were to go overboard this could be very bad, so I think it would be good to have the engine shutoff even if I had to restart it later. Also, the MOB+ can provide an alarm if a crew member were go overboard.

I had the Fell on my prior boat. Easy install and it worked well. You can have several fobs for crewmembers and select if you want just an alarm or shut off the boat. Only issue I had was the fobs tended to go through batteries every few months.

The question and answers at the West Marine link say that this electronic kill switch will not work with Volvo Diesel inboard engines.

bradlail,
Thanks, this is useful information for boats with a second helm station.

I have not installed my MOB+ yet because I am not ready to drill a big hole in my new boat.
Still trying to decide on the best mounting location.
Between the throttle and VHF and as far to the right as possible?
Or, just below the existing cutoff switch?
