WOMEN’S BOATING CLASS: "CONFIDENCE IN BOATING" - November 5 - Everett, WA

Many of you have heard word of a Ranger Tug/Cutwater Women’s Only Boating Class and are probably wondering what the details of the class are. Here’s the scoop. If you haven’t heard about it, but are interested, this is for you too. We will indeed have the class, however, unfortunately, we do not have a lot of lead time. The class is scheduled for Saturday, November 5.

General Description: A BOATING WORKSHOP RECOMMENDED FOR WOMEN TAUGHT BY WOMEN
Instructors:  Presented by women of Flotilla 11 from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
For:   Women interested in building their confidence in boating
When:   Saturday, November 5, from 9:00 to 4:00
Where:   Everett, at the Snohomish County PUD Building, 2320 California Street - We will be using the Commission Meeting Room. You will find parking information on their page.

Cost: There will be a fee, however, I apologize but I will have to get back with you on this - loose ends are still being put together. It will not be more than $50.00, hopefully less. The fee goes toward transportation costs for instructors, their travel meals, printing of materials , as well as our lunches, coffee, snacks and building rental. It is my hope to have the lunch category sponsored - fingers X’d. We are very fortunate to have these experienced instructors graciously giving their time for the instruction and preparation of the class.

Need: Overnight accommodations for Kathryn Wellington and her co-insrtuctor for Friday night, Nov. 4. This could be separate spots or both together. Please help here if you can! Just give me a call.

This course is recommended for: women who are interested in boating; who may be the first mate to the captain of the boat, yet who feel they like to increase their knowledge of all aspects of boating; women who go out as passengers on other people's boats; or who may be anxious about boating altogether and would rather leave boating up to the captains!

Confidence in Boating is instructed by women from Flotillas of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary who have enthusiasm and experience with boating and want to help others who "ride" on boats to know what to do if the boat captain should fall overboard or become incapacitated and they will need to be "suddenly in command”!

Kathryn Wellington and her co-instructor who have a good deal of experience in teaching this class are generously offering their time in the interest of helping other women gain confidence in the over-all boating experience. Through discussion and hands on training, they encourage women to voice their concerns and help them build confidence by learning some basics of boating such as using the radio to call for help, stopping the boat, bringing someone back into the boat if there is a "man overboard", tying knots and handling lines to avoid jumping off the boat when docking! We also share information on boating concerns such as dealing with fear and improving communication with your boating partner. All necessary learning materials, coffee, lunch, and snacks will be provided. Past classes have filled to capacity level - so please do contact me right away if you are interested or have questions.

Please join us!

Please do let me know as soon as possible. We have to have all accounted for no latter than October 26, 2016. Apologies for late notice but we don’t want to schedule anything getting into the holiday season.

There will be a follow-up email with any other added details plus the cost of the day.

There were about 40 women in this class, and it was great to meet others who had similar goals, like "Take the boat out by myself" or "If something happens to my husband, I want to be able to take over and handle the emergency". For me, I have a lot more confidence that I could accomplish these two goals. The presenters, Kathryn Wellington and Maggie Albert, from Coast Guard Auxiliary-Flotilla 11- Bellingham, WA, understood our concerns, addressed them, and, most of all, provided a valuable resource listing of web sites and You Tubes so that we can keep learning and improving. I think knot tying was one of the most popular hands on activity, and I am sure we are all practicing at home. It was also helpful to share ideas about our boats and to welcome some new owners to our "family". A huge THANK YOU to Ranger/Cutwater staff (probably Jeff and Sam) for sponsoring lunch and snacks.
