Hi, On the way to Florida SW Rendezvous, my Yanmar 4BY2 raised a CHECK ENGINE fault, slowed down and eventually stopped. The fault cleared on restart - and reoccurred with increasing frequency as the trip progressed.

I tried to look for the fault code. Turns out, turning the engine off and on clears the fault code - so my first few tries showed no fault. I've seen this reported here before - eventually, I learned you must look up the fault code before shutting down the engine - hoping the fault wasn't something disastrous.

With the ignition ON.

Press button 5 for five seconds(far right) on your i5601E engine readout. Mine is nearly impossible to see, so I kneel

Screen gives several choices and highlights DIAG CODES

Press button 4 (reading from left)

My engine fault code was: P0081 - The Yanmar manual says, "Rail Pressure Governor Deviation" and "Fuel rail pressure out of range" What it means, "You have a clogged fuel filter" or "insufficient fuel is reaching the fuel pump" or "your lifpump is not working."

I removed the clogged filer - I had an extra inline - and the engine ran fine.

After reading about the Check Engine threads, I thought I'd clarify how I found the diagnostic code. Clearly, the "what it means" is my huor.

I hate how scary fault codes can be. sometimes its just a simple clogged filter 🙂

Stuart, Thanks for the tip. The R25 Classic is new to me and I'm sure I'll need to look up error codes someday.

Thanks Stu. Good to know.
I've been wondering if there was some place to plug in my OBD II code reader I have for the diesel truck. Looks like I don't have to. Time to pull out the manuals and have a closer look at this.

Yanmar sells an adapter to permit a standard plug reader to plug in. I don’t know how to get one.

Good info Stu,

Glad you are making it to the Rendezvous!! We will see you there. Also, on some boats there is a strainer on the end of the pickup in the tank. That has been an issue on some boats in the past. Not sure why there would be a strainer when you have filters. Just seems like a very inconvenient place to go looking for problems.

Another Yanmar got towed into the rendezvous with a p0088 error. New primary fuel filter fixed it good as New.
