Doing the winter maintenance on my boat. Noticed that the air filter was hanging a little lower than normal. Upon closer inspection I found that the rubber connection between the turbo charger and the unit was ripped for lack of a better word. This "rip" would be nearly impossible to find in the early stages. It would require depressing the filter and looking where it is connected to the turbo. The neck of rubber has a tear that coincides with the change in thickness of the rubber in the unit. I am guessing that I am not the only one who has this problem (since it is not a wear part it has only been removed once since 2011 for cleaning) so it is something to take a look at when your engine hatch is open. Hopefully this is a unique part failure and not endemic to the Yanmar series but something to check none the less.

Yanmar seems to have had issues in the past with tubes and filler pipes which change diameter and 'neck down'. on one of my Yan diesels, the rubber hose into the oil cooler was designed to 'neck down' (for no apparent reason. ) after only 2 years/ 60 engine hours, that hose split at the point where the diameter changed and threw coolant all over, leading to an engine overheat. i had to let every thing cool off, wrap it and limp home . when i called my dealer (a Yanmar -gold' hi volume guy--) about getting a new hose he told me they'd had big problems with that particular hose and in particular with hoses that 'neck down. my part was also on backorder so i was glad i had enough high temp silicon wrap, and enough extra coolant to limp around for a month.

so if that's a critical part , check it yearly and carry a spare. maybe Ranger can weigh in on whether they've seen a lot of these failures, and whether yan admits there's an issue?

I am surprised that you have not cleaned your air filter since 2011. I do mine every six months. My issue has been the filter slipping off the collar. I have found that cleaning the metal collar and then a slight rub with emery cloth and cleaning the rubber connector eliminated the problem.
