Yanmar Diesel Overheating

After running my engine at high revs for several minutes, it would overheat. I make it a practice to clean the seawater filter often, but checked it anyway - not the problem. After limping back to the dock, I ended up dismantling the entire seawater cooling system. I could find no blockages. Then, I noticed when the engine was running, tiny bubbles in the seawater filter bowl. I changed out the o-ring at the base of the bowl and, presto, the problem was fixed. The 0-ring was less than $2.00.

What was the indication that you were overheating ? I don't see a temp gauge in my 21.
