Is it a big deal to connect the shift position indicator that shows on the Yanmar display so that it indicates the transmission position, i.e., Forward, Neutral and Reverse. Ladybug, Too seems to have a very stiff shift and then very loose throttle. I have adjusted the throttle friction but this makes the shift even stiffer in the Teleflex unit. It gets to where I can't tell when I have it out of gear so the indication would help. I know I need to address the stiffness in the shift but I haven't had time to trace it out. I plan to disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and go from there.

The combination shifter/throttle always seems vague about neutral.. Yesterday we were docking with a bit of wind... The dock boy had hold of the rail and I went aft to get the dock line on... Just as I got to the cockpit we both felt (and heard) the unit shift into forward gear and the boat lurched forward... I scooted forward and got control, but I was not happy about that little surprise...

I ALWAYS disengage the shifter(big button on shifter base) whenever I leave engine running and unattended

I too am very disappointed with the "feel" or better yet the lack of feel of my shifter.

This weekend I almost had a potentially LIFE THREATENING incident when I grazed the lever while floating backwards into a slip and suddenly I was moving forward quite speedily with my wife holding a mooring line and "following" the boat.

It was a scary few minutes and if was the only time I would not be upset but it has happened quite frequently.

I am to the point of talking very nicely to the shifter and hoping I may soon get it to like me.

I have tried to ADJUST the tension to no avail so far my mechanic has been unsuccessful also.

I feel that it is a a basic defect in the device. Hello Andrew

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not thrilled with mine either, for all the same reasons. In addition, I finally got past the tendency to knock the shifter into gear when reaching for the thruster controls....that caused a few unplanned bursts of power. If anyone comes up with a good retrofit solution, I'd love to hear about it.

Coming from an older R21, I feel the shifter works great. Based on my habits with the older 21, I always give the shifter a wiggle after going to neutral, just to make sure it is in neutral. If mine has a defect, I am not aware of it. A little back and forth movement when you shift to neutral helps me make sure I am completely in neutral. Of course your shifter may be different than mine. Now mine is easy to bump into gear by accident as you move around the helm.

Seems like we all have the same concerns/issues. I wonder if the manufacturer will have a fix for that. Seems like there needs to be a more defined indent to hold it in the various positions.

The shifter is a hybrid. Electric throttle with a manual shift on the Yanmar engines. They take some getting used to like any new item that is purchased. If you have ever used straight electronic controls, that is even easier to shift from forward to neutral and should always take caution. Yanmar does offer an electronic control as an option but is quite pricey. The shifter also has a friction adjustment that can be done to tighten.

Hey Andrew, I just want to be the first to point out your faux pas. I probably won't be the last. I hope that your shitter has friction control.

Sorry to hijack your thread. Now back to your regular programming. 😀

"faux pas" or "Freudian slip"

If more than one person is having this problem maybe it is not "new technology" but (pun intended) crappy technology.

If some one taps, brushes, grazes or looks at the "shifter" wrong and someone is injured or Heaven forbid killed then maybe Ranger will make this issue a priority.

per our conversation yesterday Andrew, I fully recognize that this issue is out of your hands

It appears the R21 EC has a different engine control than the rest of the models. I don't know if it is because my R21 is new and the rest of my previous boats were old and worn, or what. All I know is the engine control on the R21 is the best I have used. It has positive detents, and shifting in and out of gear has always been positive and smooth, which makes docking a breeze, and I never have to wiggle my way into neutral. Movement of the lever has always had a good feel, and have never had any sloppiness or accidental movement.

In my experience, all engine controls need some amount "getting used to". But, if many people are having a problem with the lever being so loose that it allows accidental movement/engagement, or extremely difficult to find neutral, or having un-commanded engagement, then there is a problem with the engine control system that needs to be investigated and fixed. Un-commanded engagement is the scary one. There were some car manufactures that tried to sluff off some un-commanded control problems and it cost them millions, as well as some lives.

Ok, that made me laugh. Thanks for that. That's what I get for working from my phone on vacation!

Andrew,
If we haven't said it before... Thanks for your valuable help and concerns for the owners problems. Any new product will have some squawks . Some minor and some not. Some are a factory build issue and others are vendors issues . These vessels require you sit down and read the manuals. The systems are not really complex until you get to electronics, but todays systems now are mostly plug and play.In my experience the Ranger tug family as well as yourself have gone above and beyond in warranty and post warranty service. This is one of the reasons why I recommend these vessels during my travels. Besides they are so darn cute.... 🙂

Thanks again!

Frank
