Does the 2007 R-21 EC have the Yanmar 3YM30 engine? Any/many problems reported in getting it to start? Have seen some postings elsewhere about Yanmar 3GM30f engine having starting problems.

Hi Kent,

The 3YM30 Yanmar replaced the GM model series and it is the standard and only available engine used in the R-21EC tugs. Kolo Iki is a 2007 model and has the 3YM30 engine. Other than some minor electrical problems including a dead number 1 battery and a loose battery starting cable, she cranks right up every time I turn the key.

Aloha,

Rick

😀 Rick, does the 3YM30 have glow plugs or other assist for starting in cooler temps?? My 3GM30F doesn't and it does NOT like starting in the cold wx, 30's - 40's. Using heaters, hair dryers etc doesn't work if you are on the water and don't have AC (shore power). Joe

😀 Never mind Rick. I have found the answer. Be glad you have the later version yanmar as it has many plusses.

Depends on the year of tug you own, which will determine which model of Yanmar you may have. I am not sure what the cutoff is on the GM vs. YM as I was not at Ranger at that time. The YM does use glow plugs and do not have alot of info on the GM series.

I should re-phrase that. I am not sure when the cutoff point was on the Ranger Tugs for the GM model Yanmar. I am guessing that the 2007 models have the YM series. Been YM since I have started with Ranger Tugs.
