When we recently took our R-29, Circle T, on a formation trip with Stuart Royston's R-29, Spirit of Gratitude, it included a very early morning departure from Catalina Island, so it was still dark. During this time we discovered that our Yanmar's engine instrument was not backlit so the readings were not visible without a flashlight. Stuart's identical instrument was properly backlit and the display was visible.

There is no manual for this instrument that I know of. Does anyone know if I simply need to push a couple of buttons on the display to turn on the back lighting feature. If not, I guess I have a wiring issue.

Any information or experience on this appreciated.
Thanks (again)

You can look up the manual on-line. Through the menu there is a way to dim or brighten the backlight. We had to do this on Shared Dream when cruising at night on Lake Union. Since I don't do it often, I can't remember the sequence.
Best Regards

Yo Tym,

The Yanmar Display manual can be found right on this forum from the Forum Index under Ranger Factory Technical Bulletins. It seems Andrew has had lots of questions about this, so he posted the manual on TugNuts. Or just click here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1113

Ken & Jerry,

Thanks to both of you for that. With your help I found the online manual and the answer, and then tried it out on our boat and it worked.

FYI, pressing the far right key momentarily is the way to bring up both the LIghting and Contrast soft keys and make adjustments.

Appreciate the help very much!

Not to screw you up any further but there are probably many functions you might now know on this Yanmar gauge.

You can hold that far right button to access some factory settings. There is a key on there that says "Pop up Keys lock or unlock." If you unlock this feature, it will allow you to change the pods you have set on the screen. For instance, on page two or the second key from the left, you can change all of the pods on that screen to display what you like. Note that some of these functions do not work. Just a helpful tip if you didn't already know.
