Curious about two issues with the Yanmar service manual in terms of changing the engine impeller and changing the coolant. Past posts have been very helpful, but am just wondering if anyone has actually done these procedures in accordance with the manual

First one is changing the impeller. Service Manual (pg 7-19), suggests that you need to “cut the seawater belt to remove it” before you can replace the impeller. The manual also tells us that you need a “belt removal tool” to put the new belt back on. (Seems weird that they call it a belt removal tool when you only use it to put the belt back on.) Manual also suggests that you will need a breaker bar and a socket wrench.

I know at least one person on this web site that has changed an impeller in Desolation Sound without breaking the belt and it sounds like you just needed a ¾ inch socket and a screw driver. Wondering if anyone has actually followed the procedures outlined in the manual. Do we need to have this belt tool for removing/installing the seawater pump? If so, where do you get it?

Second issue is the Catch 22 procedure for draining the coolant. On page 7-10 in the Yanmar Service manual, you are told that you must remove the heat exchange to access the cylinder drain plug behind it, so that you can drain the coolant. Manual tells you to go to page 7-13 to learn how to remove the heat exchanger.

Then on page 7-13 it tells you that before you remove the heat exchanger, you need to drain the coolant! Obviously these two instructions contradict each other.
Which operation do you do first? Sounds like a very messy process. Has anybody actually done this IAW the manual?

I changed my impeller last summer with only a screwdriver for removing and replacing the belt. Seemed relatively straight forward at the time and I didn't have the special tools anyway. I did have an extra belt ready but didn't need it and replaced the original belt without damage. My only special tool was an extra set of hands (compliments of Dave Baker) to pass me tools as you need to stand on your head to perform the procedure. Took about 45 minutes tops.

Can't shed light on the coolant issue; haven't changed mine since new.

Lyman,
Thanks for your accolades for assisting you. But, the true thanks go to you for teaching me how to change the impeller on someone elses boat but mine....... It's always nice to learn how to do thee things on a boat other than your own.......

In all honesty, it was great to be able to assist a fellow boater!
