I am looking at a 21 EC for sale. It has the Yanmar 30. Motor runs well and tach works but the Yanmar panel only shows the hours intermittently (tapping it or turning motor on and off will sometimes make it work) The other concern is that the idiot lights do not turn on except for the battery warning when you turn the key on. All my other boats had all idiot lights turn on when you turn the key on before staring to verify they are working. There is also not test buzzer when you turn the key on. Is this repairable with checking connections or can the panel be replaced?
I really do not want to go without oil or high temp pressure alarms working. I am not finding replacement panels for sale at Yanmar online parts sources.

What year model is the R-21. I had a 2009 R-21EC and can tell you about the tach light. It’s an easy fix. You should get a battery light warning and an oil pressure warning when the key is turned on and both should off within a second or two when the engine starts.

Thanks CaptnKarl....Only the battery light is on when key to "On." No buzzer with key to "On" before starting.
The hour meter comes and goes. Does that mean the hours are not being tallied or its just the display (meaning there may be more hours than indicated when the hour meter does display a number)?

What is the fix for the hour meter display?

If you look at fig-34 of the yanmar parts catalog for the 3YM30 you will see a fuse (3A) I would check that first, it does should like a electrical problem. Also the part numbers for replacement parts are listed in the parts catalog. Good luck on your repair, let us know what you find. Bob

Harley. There’s a very good YouTube video on how to replace the hour meter screen for the Yanmar tach (it’s done on a catamaran and it’s a step by step process. Search Yanmar tach repair and you’ll see it). You can also clean the screen contact on the tach and get it to work for a short time. The engine hours ARE being measured even if the light is not working. If you watch the video you’ll also see and hear the alarm sound when the key is turned. That fix might be the fuse Bob mentioned. I never had that issue. Bottom line is fixing the hour meter on the Yanmar takes some time but it can be fixed. I ordered a replacement screen from eBay to have on hand. They are fairly easy to find and not that expensive. Good luck on the repair. The 3YM30 Yanmar is a very good engine. Easy to work on and very reliable.
Cheers,
Karl

I have found an array of Yanmar panels for sale at AC DC Marine in California. I am checking with them for a compatible panel. I would so love to add real gauges for oil pressure, water temperature and voltage and hopefully in the space provided. After running diesels for 40 years I think its important to monitor.
