I heard the new 21's come with a Volvo. I am assuming it's a D1-30 after looking at Volvo's website.

I have no experience with Volvo and this is my first experience with Yanmar which I have no complaints with at this point. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the D1-30 and could they comment an whether it is better than the 3YM30. I'm wondering if it's

1. quitter
2 less vibration
3. more fuel efficient

Could my 3YM30 be replaced with a Volvo without a major hassle if it blew up tomorrow? I like the fact that is is NMEA 2000 so I could display engine info on my Furuno plotter.
Just thinking out loud here.

Our Volvo d3 150 is performing well at its 50 hour break in mark. One thing unrelated to performance is that there seems to be a shortage of certified Volvo mechanics in the Puget sound area so plan ahead for scheduled maintenance. The initial break in inspection requires a certified mechanic apparently for warranty purposes. The only place available was Coastal in Seattle. We live in the South sound area which can add several hours of travel time and several hundred dollars to the mechanic bill. Coastal has been great and set it up with another mechanic (Commencement Bay Marine) in Tacoma to meet us there to work on it as one of their mechanics lives in Tacoma. But it did take a lot of advance notice to schedule it. FYI, Commencement bay Marine is working on adding a Volvo cert diesel mechanic. Currently they only have one for gas. Both places have been very nice to work with. Just a heads up for those newbies that may need to get their break in service done before desolation sound.

TugBug was blessed to be the first R-21EC with the spiffy green Volvo D1-30 engine. I think it is noisier and has more vibrations than I'd like, but I also felt the Yanmar was too, even though my only experience was on a sea-trial with an unfinished 21EC. Plus I know nothing else to compare it to. However, we got about 22 hours and about 30nm of initial varied cruising on her for about 8.5 gallons of diesel. So you can't beat that with a stick.

As for the NEMA, I dunno. I asked Ranger about hooking up the D1-30 to my Garmin 740s and was told it didn't work that way.
