I have just replaced engine battery with a new one, fully charged it and engine starts are still sluggish.
Terminal connections at the battery are spotless. Ground wire to engine block connection is clean.
I tried several starts and each one was sluggish, sometimes barely get a successful start. Then one of the attempts to start actually did fail and volvo error in the dash was something about a crank sensor alarm. Engine did not start.
I gave it a rest for a minute, then the next 6 starts were perfect. Engine turned over and started very quickly.
Not sure where to look next. Any thoughts?

I would like to check the power and ground connections to the starter. If someone could show me in a photo or describe where the starter is on a D3-150, I would appreciate that 🙂

I just noticed that even with shore power ON, the start is sluggish. I am struggling with this.

The alarm I mentioned is "Sensor failure Timing sensor, crank Engine performance might be affected Contact Volvo Penta workshop". This alarm occurs when the engine start actually fails. Then, each time this alarm happens, the subsequent starts are perfect, like brand new. Until sometime (hours or number of starts) later, when the starts become sluggish again.

Hi there,

That's a tricky one where we would need more diagnostic information. However, you may have an issue with the starter itself. When you have a consistent issue with the starter constantly running sluggishly and slowing down during the start attempt, it is an issue with the electrical supply (bwttery, etc.) But for irregular issues, the problem usually lies with the starter itself. Only way to be sure is to pull it and have it bench tested. Not sure who you have available in your area but I would begin with a quick call to your local Volvo shop. Hope this helps get you started.

Cheers!

Ralf

I am seeing the same issue on my 2016 25sc D3-150 again.
I have had the crank sensor replaced once last October (10 months ago) and now its failing again according to that same error message.
Or is it really failing? I have no clue what's going on.
Anyone else seen crank sensor issues or better yet multiple times across 2 difference sensors?
I know now its definately not starter or batteries.
Thanks for any help in advance 🙂
Randy

I had the Crank Sensor replaced last October. I am now in the same position where periodically (every month or two?) I get Volvo "Crank Shaft Timing (or is it position) Sensor failed". Took it back into the shop and they said all looks good on the surface with power and grounds etc. They want to look deeper into starter and possible some other sensor on or near the flywheel? Anyway, still a mystery. Might look at starter next.
