A friend is arranging indoor storage for his 2012 R27. His boat is on a Float-On trailer with 16” wheels. My 2012 R27 on an EZ Loader trailer with 15” wheels makes it through a door slightly more than 12’ with literally a couple inches to spare.

What technique can be used to accurately measure the exact height of his boat on the trailer?

Hitch the boat to the towing vehicle. Back the boat in slowly. If it hits the door frame, it's slightly over 12 ft tall.

Depends on the hitch height and other variables. Sometimes it's as simple as letting a bit of air out of the tires.

Potentially hitting the door with the boat, no matter how slowly, is simply not an option.

I measured our C-28 height on trailer with a 5 ft 2x4, level and tape measure. Takes two people. First duct tape the level to the top of the 2x4. Then one person holds the 2x4 level while touching the high point of the boat. The second person reads the tape measure from the 2x4 to ground. We had the end of the tape measure duct taped to the top of the 2x4, read the tape on the ground and subtracted 3.5” for the 2x4’s height. Took only a couple of minutes.

Thanks, Al. I was actually thinking of such a scheme, but thought there might be a better way.

Measure it in stages. From the ground measure the height from the ground to a point on the side deck next to the highest point on the boat. Then from on the boat, measure from the point you measured from the ground to the cabin top, then measure from the cabin to to the height of the tallest point. Allow for a bit of crown on the cabin top and add everything up. That will get you within an inch or two.

That’s the idea I have already suggested to him. I will mention the leveled 2x4 as an alternate and he can choose.
