Vulcan for Ranger Tug R-27 inboard

Please pardon me if this has been discussed but will the Vulcan 9 (20 lb) fit without modification on a Ranger Tug R 27 inboard. we are just not trusting the Lewmar Plow here in muddy Georgia waters as we anticipate a cruise up the ICW to Annapolis this summer. I have seen in some of the chats that the Rocna does not work for instance without modifications (so the tip does not hit the bow). Is that the same problem with the Vulcan 9?

I own a 2012 R27 inboard. I have no experience with the Vulcan 9 so I can provide no comments about its R27 inboard fitment. However, if you want to consider a Rocna anchor, I have used a Rocna 10 (22lbs) on my boat without issue for seven boating seasons on all types of bottoms on the lakes, rivers, and inland coastal waters of the eastern U.S., including the AICW. On the waters you plan to cruise, from Georgia with its large tidal swings, to the Chesapeake Bay, the Rocna 10 has never let me down. Ever. If you use the proper scope and setting technique, I feel it will fit your boat and your mission.

One more thing CaspersCruiser- You have had your Rocna for seven years so that is the older disign. I think I have heard that the new ones have different dimensions and will that work on our older Ranger Tugs (mine is the 2015 year model).

The Rocna was installed by the original owners of my boat so it is older than seven years. For grins, I looked at Rocna !0 anchors online this morning. To me, they appear to be same as the one I have. Here’s what I have:

We have a Rocna 10 on the cow of a 2017 R25SC. I think the installation set up is the same as a 27, no issues. Great anchor!!

We were advised by Rocna to use the Vulcan 12 on our R27 OB due the boat’s weight and windage. The Vulcan 9 was considered because it had similar shaft length to the Lamar 16.5#.

With either the Rocna or Vulcan you’ll need the “anchor guard” from Mantus to keep the tip from contacting the bow and keep the anchor secure.

We’ll be putting the Vulcan 12 on in the Spring.

I just recently completed a southeastern portion of the Great Loop (Biloxi. MS to Norfolk, VA). 1400 miles using a Rocna 10 with 50 ft of 5/16th chain and 150ft nylon rode. Rarely anchored in water over 10 ft deep. Had no problems anchoring my 2011 R27. Retrieving the anchor was trouble free also. As recommended by other contributors to this forum, stainless anchor and chain is the way to go. The benefit of stainless is its "slipperiness. I rarely had to clean mud or bottom debris off the chain and the anchor was easy to rinse/clean. Only mod to the anchor roller was a taller bail on the top of the roller to accommodate the wider anchor shank.

Agreed! However, the Mantus “anchor guard” may help keep an anchor stable in the roller. Haven’t bought the new hook yet, but the Rocna people were hugely responsive!
