Hello

My 2021 R25 was delivered with 50' anchor chain which is great but doesn't have a swivel shackle. I'm quite surprised by this.

I think as the anchor line will twist as it goes in and out through the windlass causing it to get kinked and possibly stuck. The anchor line is spliced through the eye and then directly to the chain. So I think only way to fix this is is to cut the line and resplice it to the eye and then employ a swivel.

Has anyone else encountered this and what was your solution?

Thanks!

I don't run a swivel and haven't ever had an issue with the anchor twisting. The anchor chain coming in struggles because of the small anchor locker. The chain piles up directly under it. I stop the windlass and use my hand to flatten/spread the chain out in the locker, and restart the windlass. Just my experience.

We have had some anchorages where we spun 360’s around the anchor all evening and night. For a while I would find deep water (say 300 ft plus), stop and drop the anchor all the way to let it untwist.
This didn’t happen very often but it happened enough. Installed a Mantus swivel at the chain/anchor junction. Problem solved.

A swivel fits between the END of the chain and the anchor. If the swivel is installed between line and chain, you would not be able to get it through your windlass gypsy.

I have a Mantus swivel and a Rocna 10 (22lbs) anchor for my 2012 R27. I am happy with it.

I'll second Casper on the placement of the swivel. Between the chain end and the anchor.
On large ships the chain is made up of 90 foot sections called shots, 15 fathoms.
The last shot before the anchor is a half of a shot, 45 feet, and that is where the swivel goes, it's then called the outboard swivel shot.

ok, I'll see if i can put a swivel between the anchor and the chain. I'm in area where it's not deep enough to let it untwist itself.

Thanks!!

If you have fully retrieved the chain then there is no twist.

I could not retrieve the line. There was such a kink in the windlass I had to take it apart and clear it. I pulled all the line out and untwisted all by hand. The boat is wrapped now but I think had no shackle like between the anchor and the chain but I'll look when I remove the boat wrap shortly and examine it.
