I've owned my new to me 2015 RT-25 SC for a year and a half. Two of the batteries say 2017. It is time for new. I'm considering replacing with exactly what is there -- Universal AGM TYPE - 121000. 100 Ah

Bank of four: Starter / 2 House / Thruster

I wouldn't mind a bit more power overall but not sure how necessary it is. We go out 5-7 days, mostly at anchor in SWFL in and around Everglades / 10,000 Islands, etc.

It's always seemed to be 'leaking' somewhere. My nephew did some checking for me and found two batteries with bad cells. Since the age of the batteries is way up there,

I'm going to replace all four and start fresh.

Is there a better, similarly sized battery set I should be considering?

I have a MACE generator as well.

The replacements for exactly what I have is in the range of $300 each. Easy to come by and quick delivery, which I would prefer.

Does anyone know if these are the standard type of batteries shipped from the factory when the boat was new?

Are there special requirements for the starter battery to crank the Volvo Penta D3 150 HP?

Thanks for any comments and possible solutions.

I recently switched from the UPG to Lifeline brand batteries. 125 Ah. (More power) If you do some reading up on them, they have an excellent reputation. I did deep cycle for the house and starter batteries for the engine and thruster. So far happy with them.

Thanks so much... Just the kind of info I was looking for (and need). BTW, do you have a Ranger Tug 25? I'm hoping so, meaning that the batteries would fit perfectly in my battery bank slot. The battery area is kind of laid out for the exact size of batteries that are already in there.

You can confirm the size of your current batteries by measuring their OD and looking up that size on a battery group table. My guess is that your R-25SC uses the same size (Group 27) that our former R-25 Classic used. Possibly they are the slightly bigger Group 31 size but I doubt it.
Fluid Motion used a one type fits all needs with use of the Universal Power Batteries. Good for house deep cycle use but not the best for short duration high output for engine or thruster roles.
I still have 2 UPG house deep cycle batteries (both obtained for free by selling dealership) and two of the X2Power batteries from Batteries Plus for engine and thruster. A lot of folks like the Trojan brand or the Optima Red or Blue Top batteries too.
Look for a CCA rating of 900+ which tells you the battery delivers a lot of power when needed for engine and thruster use. Check out the warranties too as they do vary considerably.

Thanks, both of you. My battery group currently is the Group 27. The other batteries recommended were of the Group 31 (I think).

Every bit of info begins to inform my next choice -- so thank you. Do you know, off hand, if a Group 31 will fit in my battery space? So, overall, deep cycle for house and CCA of 900+ for engine and thruster?

A Group 31 is 1” longer than the Group 27. It’s also 1/2” taller. You may have room but you may need a bigger battery tray. If you can do it the 31’s give you a better more powerful battery.

I also have a 2015 R25SC and mine are group 31s. I upgraded on purchase to AGMs. All your batteries should be exactly the same. Same size, same type, bought and put in the service at the same time, then rotate them yearly. I rode the first set for 6 years and should not have replaced them. Seven years and they still would have been in really great shape. But ya start getting nervous when everyone else says to replace them in four!

I have the same boat. Only thing I did was add another group 31 to the thruster bank. I put it in the locker forward of the battery compartment and ran the wires to the post of the other thruster battery, so when I run thruster and/or windlass I don't run that one battery down so much.
