2020 R29-CB with Garmin VHF 210 AIS and Garmin GPSMAP 8612 Chart plotter. I receive AIS info no problem but I’m not transmitting an AIS signal. MMSI no is

entered in VHF, all AIS options in VHF and Chart plotter turned on ! But not transmitting i.e. other boats don’t see me. Any idea what is my transmitting problem?

I'm pretty sure the Garmin VHF 210 AIS radio is receive only, and is not a transponder.

Thanks! This is exactly what I came to realize! I’m still learning

Actually, it’s not the radio that process the AIS signal, it’s an independent AIS unit that is wired through the radio. My 2017 R29 has a VHF 200 and had an AIS 300 which is probably what you have as it is receive only. I swapped out the AIS 300 for a used AIS 600 to have transmit as well as receive. It’s an easy plug and play swap using the existing cables. I think an AIS 800 will also work. Otherwise, there are many newer options (for much more money) that others highly recommend.

The 210 model (which OP said they have) does process the AIS signal as it has a built in AIS RX (unlike the 200 you have) and the newer boats don't have the extra AIS300 module.

Is that the stock one? If so, the specs for the R-29 actually say “AIS Receiving”. The 31 and the 43 come stock with transmit and receive.

It appears we are both right! There are two models of the 210, one with AIS, one without. Curious to see what the boat actually has!
