PNW South Sound Spring Thaw

Hey Chris,
Your Google Doc on this is fantastic! I haven't done the calculations but what do you anticipate the average cruising speed for this flotilla will be? Thanks.

Right now our boat's minimum planing speed is around 28 knots (twin 300 HP outboards go vroom). I'm hoping to order the 5 blade props that @Submariner has worked with PowerTech on in the next week or so (there's a thread in the Owner Modifications forum), which should allow us to get on plane at about 21 knots, which is probably more reasonable for the smaller RTs.

I think you are right. 21 kts is still a pretty fast cruise for us.

Looking at the data with new props I can get reasonable fuel economy at even lower speed (perhaps at the expense of my wake) but we could also slow boat around 7 knots (at least on the way to Gig Harbor) if people prefer. I'd just have to update DeepZoom to get new times.

Our boat cruises really well somewhere between 12-18 knots. We find that 16 is kind of a sweetspot. It's a good combo of speed, comfort and fuel consumption. Top speed is about 24-25 knots but I don't like to run at that speed for extended periods of time.

Hi All,

Yes, we would love to meet up with you for late lunch/early dinner at Tides, one of our favorite South Bay stops!

Unless there is weather approaching, an emergency, or some other unplanned pressing necessity, we cruise at 7 knots, so we will leave a little earlier than you and plan to arrive at Tides dock around 2 PM, (May 2nd). Probably leave Zittels around 11 AM, cruise through Pitt passage and mosey up north of Fox island. That should put us under the bridge pretty close to slack tide with a nice push home after dinner. We would probably want to leave Gig Harbor by 4 PM to get back to the home dock at a reasonable hour.

Looking forward to getting to know more south sound Fluid Motion folks!

Slow speed cruising is fine with us, in fact, we prefer it. 11am from Zittles is probably a good starting time for us also.

Slow boat is great for us on this trip. We just normally have long distance days heading north so my default is getting up on plane

I'll update the doc and DeepZoom later and post here.

I updated the Google Doc (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sPJ-8FqTKXWWKGLwc_D9vR8q8mreOyfXwM1gtO-oTn0/edit?tab=t.0) and DeepZoom with the following plan:

  • 9:45am Aweigh Message departs Swantown en route Zittel’s
  • 10:30am Rendezvous with OverTime & American Flyer at Zittel's Marina Inc
  • 11:00am Depart Zittel’s for Gig Harbor (expected arrival 2pm)
  • Jerisich Dock | Gig Harbor, WA as backup (free as long as you don’t stay past 8pm or connect to water/power, rafting encouraged on the east side of the dock)
  • Walk or dinghy to Tides Tavern 11am-9pm (21+) - guest dock (2h max), rafting encouraged, often busy
  • 4pm Depart Gig Harbor en route Zittel’s (expected arrival 6:45pm)

Thanks Chris!
I was at the boat show today and spread the word. I talked with Steve Z and he said he would do the same. It should be really fun. We may have another couple on board with us for the trip, they are well over 21 hehe.

I was also there midday and talked to Steve for a bit. Small world!

Assuming the weather isn't apocalyptic I'm going to run the boat for a few hours on 2/13 around lunchtime and top off the fuel tank. Happy to stop by Zittels if you want to get out on the water.

That sounds like fun.. Thursday of next week 2/5 looks pretty good weather wise. I'm thinking of stretching some legs on that day too.

I will keep an eye on this. I was planning on going to Montlake for opening day, but you never know what might happen.
