Will the anchor locker on a 2025 R27 outboard hold 300 ft of 5/8" 8 plait rope and 50' of 5/16" galvanized chain? Looks like it may be tight?

Lemondrop is a 2019 R27-OB and has 100ft of chain with 230 ft of 8 plait rode and it fits.

I think you’d be ok with 300ft of 8 plait rode on 50’ of chain. It’ll probably be tight. It’s not a very big locker.

The boat comes with 200ft of 8 plait rode with 50’ of 5/16th chain.

Very interesting. I was under the impression from the literature that it came with 150/50. I just went out and measured it and you are correct. 200/50 but 3 strand rope? I guess they need to update their literature.

I grew up on the Atlantic coast. Only anchored at depths requiring 300' a few times but it is always nice to have if you need it.

Out here in the Pacific Northwest, I've been fine with the 50' of chain and 200' of rode. I've anchored in as deep as 95' with 18' tide swings. Most of the time I target 20-45' depths with up to 16 foot tide swings. The Rocna10 is way better than the Lewmar Claw that the boat comes with. Our anchorages are often soft or hard mud. I do highly recommend a bridle for overnight anchoring.
 
Thank you Martin. We have decided to go with the factory 200' and the Rocna 10 based on all the reviews and research I have done. I do have a 300' auxiliary anchor line if ever needed.
Next upgrade will be Starlink.

Been browsing your previous posts and would like to know which chain we should purchase to add 50’ to our R27? I see that the factory provides 50’ of 5/16th but wasn’t sure what type of chain, where to buy, and how to connect it together?

Thanks for your info and feedback. We did purchase a lightly used Rocna 10 and plan to also buy the Mantus anchor guard.

Unless you are going stainless, you want 5/16” Galvanized G4 (aka G40 or G43) chain. I use CMP Group G43 High Test windlass 5/16 inch chain which is a hot-dip galvanized, high-tensile carbon steel chain designed for marine anchoring systems. It is available in ISO short pitch (better for windlasses) or long-link configurations. These chains are fully proof-tested, calibrated, and embossed with "CMP G43”

But do be sure the chain you buy is sized to work in a windless. Some are not.
There are a number of on line vendors (Dark Horse Marine, Denver Rope, five-oceans to name a few) that can custom splice your rope selection to the chain. Several brick and mortar marine supply places can do the splice as well. Don’t forget to do something about the ropes bitter end.

Is it possible to just roll into Seattle fisheries and buy 50’ of chain? Then use a connecting link to add it to my factory chain making it 100’ overall length? Or does the chain have to have a special connecting link to make it through the windlass?

Many folks avoid the specialized chain connecting links for reasons of questionable strength, installation complexity and/or concerns about the link damaging the windlass Gypsy
That said, the Crosby G-335 “Missing Link” gets many positive reviews for windlass setups. When properly peened over with a hammer, these connectors are rated to meet or exceed the strength of Grade 40 and Grade 43 anchor chains.
I’d get the Crosby link professionally installed if I went that route.

Personally, I don't think the R27-OB needs additional anchor chain. You can't tie off chain to the boat without a snubber and bridle. The connector link you'd use to connect the chain together would be the weak point as it's not as strong as a normal 5/16" chain link. If strength and such is what you're after, it's best to just replace it with a 100' length attached to another 200' of rode. But that's buying new, pre-assembled and probably a special order item.

The chain is 5/16", HT, galvanized on the R27. I also believe the 50' of 5/16" chain to be over-kill for the R27. 50' of 5/16" chain is 47 lbs. Paired with a Rocna10 is another 22 lbs. We've had great performance out of our standard setup. (200' rode, 50' chain, and Rocna10). It's a fantastic setup that the boat comes with, just needs the Rocna10 (or the Mantus M1).

This was our swing radius in Blue Mouse Cove, Glacier Bay, anchored in 75 feet of water, 22' tide swings, 15 knots of wind blowing through anchorage (25 knot winds throughout the rest of Glacier Bay). 1 foot seas in the anchorage. Two nights at anchor, we stayed put, no drag, waiting out the storm to pass. With 75' of water, the anchoring math is easy. Just put it all out until I see the bitter end, set the Rocna10 as I illustrate in our anchoring video, put on the bridle, and enjoy the scenery.

Great feedback. I’ll take the recommendation and start with the 50’ of chain. I did pick up a slightly used Mantus Bridle with snubber and mooring shackle so I should be set once I install the Rocna 10 and the anchor guard. Thanks again.
