I have installed a kicker mount on my 2020 Ranger Tug R-23 with a 91/2 Yamaha. I had planned to run a gas line to the main tank and the electric line for the starter, expecting to use a start button on the handle. However, Yamaha delivered a fully remote version with the remote connector (see photo). My order however just reads “Yamaha T9.9LPB - High Thrust Portable 4-Stroke Outboard Motor - 9.9 HP - 20" Shaft - Electric Start | Power Tilt” and says nothing about being remote. I’ve written to Yamaha and hope they’ll exchange it, but, if not, has anyone used this engine without the remote connection? Or can the remote be used for starting and shifting only or even just starting? Thanks.

It's been a few years since I bought mine but I recall the various models were confusing. I had a hard time finding what it sounds like you were looking for which is electric start, power tilt, tiller. The model you received does indeed have to be connected to the throttle unit which also contains the key/start and tilt controls. So short answer is no you can't control it without the remote unit.

Thanks Dan! I guess I'll have the fully remote setup.
