OK so it may be my old bones but sleeping on the standard V-berth mattress is not very comfortable. I noticed that some folks bought a king foam topper and cut to size while others ordered a custom topper at about 10X the price. Was wondering about the best way to go forward.
 
on my c28. I ordered an Amazon king size foam topper 2” I believe cut it to shape works great and I can roll it up and shove it under to mirror in the bow. Nice and cheap that way if I ever need I can just throw it out and get a new one, sleeps very comfortably.
 
In our R-25 Classic and the C-28 we used 3” king memory foam toppers and cut it to shape. Had an unfitted king sheet set that we tucked around the topper.
We have another topper on top of the dinette table “bed” when we have company. Only bring that when needed.
PS: I think FM uses a concrete mixture in the foam of the stock v-berth cushions…..

I had both on my R29. We got the horribly expensive topper in latex. It was really nicely done and pretty comfortable. After a couple years we added a memory foam topper from Amazon. It was ugly and I did a poor job cutting to shape but it was comfy. We realized the while the horribly expensive topper looked great, it was always covered up except when we were washing the bedding. I'd go with the DIY method.

Thanks, DIY when it is an option is often the best way to go. I appreciate your comment. I have never had this issue with past boats and there were many. I am a long term offshore cruiser , always with stock bedding in my sailboats.
 
We made our own topper from a 2” inch pad, but found it to be not enough. This year we cut down a king size 4” topper ( 2.5” dense foam + 1.5” memory foam). We will have to use it to see, but initial tests indicate comfort. We tuck in extra large king sheets. Total cost was ~ $200.
 
Foam toppers cut easily with an electric carving knife. I have had both department store versions and the Yacht Bedding more expensive option. If cost is a concern, I don't see how you can go wrong with the department store version.
 
We went the Yacht Bedding route on our C28 and are pleased. A bit more $, but it all fits and bedding is important to my first mate.
 
On the boat, we laid 2 clear plastic vinyl sheets (taped together) on the V Berth mattress and drew a line on the plastic sheets with a black marker to obtain the exact form. Back at home we cut the plastic sheet on the line. Now we had the template. We placed it on top of a 3" topper from Costco and cut with a carving knife. We use standard queen sheets for the mattress and topper.
 
Yacht Bedding worked out well for us.

That’s what we do. I have the foam on a stretchy thin blanket that I roll it up with. I like having the space in the v-berth during the day.

I guess I'm old school. we bought 2 LL bean sleeping bags. cotton. not crazy about all that foam? this made it easy to figure out which direction we liked to slept.

Sure but that doesn't solve the hard mattress issue. We bout a 4 inch topper and plan to cut it to fit. These old bones need it soft.
 
We went the Yachtbedding.com route. Expensive? Yes very. But just freaking worth it both in looks and more importantly comfort. We chose 3" Latex mattress topper because we don't care for the feeling of memory foam. I just put it in today it is so so so amazingly comfy. ( 2024 R27LE )IMG_5998.jpegIMG_6001.jpeg
 
Can someone tell me if I need to order a king or queen Costco topper for modification for our new 2022 R27?

The mattress pad cover purchased with the Yacht bedding topper covers both well. We used the topper as a template, and cut the king sized foam topper with an electric knife.

Very nice indeed, We decided to go with 4 inch roll up pads that we can use in the v berth and table bed. Very soft and easy to store
