hard start

If you go to my first post you will see that I'm looking at this boat. I have'ntt bought it yet. tomorrow is the survey and sea trial. The boat was unused for a while when the broker started it up for me. This is when we found we had to give it three tries. The battery charger was plugged in and it seemed to turn over well. I know this doesnt mean a lot about the condition of the batteries. The service records I received look good but of course don't mention anything about the batteries. Thanks again guys you have given me a lot to go by.
There's a manual pump the engine mounted fuel filter on port side of the engine. Just a button on top of the filter housing. Pump it a few times before starting. If you do that along with the battery parallel it should fire right off if all is well with the engine. It's not a "cold natured" engine as evidenced by the lack of glow plugs in the design. After working through the initial starting issues per above I can't recall a failed start in ten years. Even during spring commissioning every year. In fairness for first start every spring I do run a space heater in the engine space for a few hours. I also change the oil in spring and warm the oil up to probably 100-120 degrees before pouring it in the engine. But the rest of the season the engine is routinely started with ambient temps around 45-55F.

The manual (and the factory) will state that manual priming "may be necessary if the engine has not been started for a while" whatever "a while" means. If mine sits for a month, a few pumps on of the manual primer on the secondary filter will make it fire on the first or second try. If it goes on the third try after not being used for a while, I don't think there is a problem as long as it starts when warm.

i am looking at a 2009 Ranger 25. It takes three tries to start the QSD 2.0 engine After running a minute it starts normally. Any advice...
If battery is good and fuel primed, the next thing to check is the resistance from negative terminal of your battery to the engine block. Should read less than a few ohms. I ran new ground and it was night and day difference. That engine needs to turn fast to start.
