100 hour service seems too long...

I have a D6 Volvo which requires a 200 hour first maintenance, which seems late to me for an initial post-break-in service. Perhaps I’ve worked on too many older engines that are not as sophisticated as these. If I think of 40 miles and hour as an average in a car, this means that at 200 hours there would be 8000 miles, which seems too long! Should I change the oil and filters at 100 hours for an initial service or am I just behind the times?
I love these engines- maybe they are even better than I think!?

If it was my engine I would make first service at 100 hours. More frequent oil changes never hurt an engine, not frequent enough changes most certainty has.

Collect an oil sample and have it analyzed, that will tell you if the service duration is correct or not. Blackstone labs is who I use. https://www.blackstone-labs.com/

I had a 2014 D6 370. First oil change was listed at 50 hours, then every year or two hundred hours, whichever came first.

What type of oil is specified? Service life is much longer for synthetic oil.

For my D4 Volvo 300 HP in my 2019 R29 CB NW Edition the specified first maintenance is scheduled for 12 months or 200 hrs. I suspect I'll be under 100 hrs at the 12 month point. It used to be at the 50 hr point but Volvo has made changes for these newer engines.

As has been said, if you feel the 12 months or 200 hrs is not to your liking then go ahead and change the oil sooner. Sucking the oil out via the special oil extraction tube on starboard side of engine makes for changing oil easy and should be all done in 1 hr of your time.
