Any recommendations or advice about adding a COMPACT 12 volt freezer for R 27 extended cruises? The factory installed frig seems to be sufficient for refrigerated needs, but being able to carry a supply of premade frozen home cooked meals sounds nice. Thanks.

This is the one we use.

It fits in the port cockpit locker if you don't have a generator in there. I didn't install the handles as we just leave it in there permanently. It uses around the same power as the stock fridge and is quiet. I added a foam pad underneath it to dampen the slight vibration it was transmitting to the boat.

Note that while you can get by over one night at anchor with both the standard fridge and this freezer running it will be pushing the limits of your batteries so you will want to recharge the batteries first thing in the morning. Once everything is well frozen you can also turn it off overnight as long as you don't open it and turn it back on first thing at sun up. We added a second solar panel this year to cover the extra load.

I got this one and we are very happy with it. There are different sizes and I went maybe a little too big to fit properly, This one lives in our cockpit and doubles as a seat for us on our R29.. It is 12 volt or 110. I leave both plugged in and it automatically switches to 12 volt when there is no 110. We live full time on the boat and it opened up a whole new shopping aisle for us 🙂

Thanks folks!

How do you access DC/AC power on the aft deck? On my R 27 I don't see any "outside" 12 volt/AC plug ins? I would like to keep it out there as I can adjust for "listing" by putting it on the port side.

Red Raven, I have a generator in the port cockpit storage compartment. What say?

Best . . .

On our boat there is a 12V plug (cigararette plug) in the port locker and that is what we use. Our boat is also wired with downrigger 12V plugs under each gunwale which are equivalent to the cig plugs and accessible with the locker when closed but would need an adaptor plug or a mod to the receptacle to with the freezer Off-the-Shelf. If I had a generator In the port locker and I did not have the downrigger receptacles I would add a cig plug under the gunwale near where the freezer is stored or build an extension cable with a cig light plug to feed into the port locker receptacle and run that through a corner of the appropriate locker lid.

Another option is to put the freezer in the cave (midship cabin). The is a 12 V cig plug there.

On my 29 there is a wash down pump switch. I drilled in a cigarette outlet in the side of our locker and stole power from the wash down switch. You should be able to find 12 volts somewhere you could tap into. If you go directly to the battery make sure you add a fuse in line to be safe.Where ever you are going to put it measure first and think about the lid being able to open. I have mine in a spot that works great for us but I had to remove the hinges to gain access and just place the lid on top. This works fine and allowed installation in a spot that it would normally not fit with the top being hinged.

We use this: https://www.edgestar.com/fp430-compact- ... FP430.html

Very reasonably priced and does truly go sub-zero. This fits under the V-berth and we leave the center cushion in when using it on long trips. I ran a 110V outlet and 12 v cig outlet to the v-berth so we could plug both in. When hooked to shore power, or generator if you have one, it runs off of that. As soon as you disconnect shore power it switches automatically to 12v.

Had it for 7 years with no issues.

If you don’t need quite the huge capacity of our top chest freezer, or you simply need something a little more reasonably priced, owners and experts rave about this roomy GE model. It has 10.6 cubic feet of space – still more than enough capacity for a family who likes to stockpile a lot of frozen goods – and it’s Energy Star-certified for efficiency of the Deep Freezers.

You could also check out the ARB fridge/freezer. Low draw and we used it on our desolation sound trip and 10 days later still had frozen ice cubes from the start of the trip.

just note that almost all of these draw around 6amps. I believe the dometic ones can be set to auto turn off if battery voltage gets too low which might be handy.
