I just went to try and plug in a 12V DC cooler into the two (what I thought were normal car cigarette lighter receptaces) on my RT31CB and discovered a different plug receptacle which I don't recognize. The receptacles are located in the aft salon approximately 12" above the floor decking on the port and starboard sides and appear to accept a 2 prong "circular" type plug.

Any idea what these are and where to get the associated plugs for them?

Thanks,

Sounds like down rigger plugs. You can swap them out with regular cigarette lighter plugs.

They are Scotty Downrigger receptacles that come standard on the NW Edition boats.
Each side of the cockpit has a receptacle on a 40 amp circuit.

I power a cockpit freezer/frig through one of these receptacles and changed the frig plug to the following:

On our C-28 it was super easy to swap out the Scotty plugs for a heavy duty cigarette plug female connector. I too am powering a portable freezer in the cockpit. The freezer draws up to 15 Amps so I replaced the two 40 amp blade fuses for the Scotty with 20 amp fuses.
We converted the Scotty plugs rather than switching out the freezers plug so it was easy to power the freezer at home while we were stocking it up. Our freezer came with a male cigarette plug to A/C converter.
Converted both sides so we could easily move the freezer from port side to starboard side. While underway it’s on the starboard side to minimize splashing. We move the freezer to port side when at rest because it’s more out of the way.

Makes sense. Thanks to all.

On my R31, in addition to the Scotty plugs in the gunnels I also have standard 12V plugs in the lazarettes.

If you have a Dometic/ARB fridge then you probably have a twist-on style 12V plug. I replaced the standard 12V plugs with the following so I could continue to use these plugs as they are more secure. It would really suck to have a standard 12V plug fall out and have a bunch of food ruined, or god forbid, your beer be warm when you go and grab one.

I also have the Domestic fridge/freezer and use the plugs in the cockpit. The first year I used a cigarette lighter style. I noticed poor connection and heating of wire as a result. This year I have a new cord from Domestic that I put a "Scotty" plug on. I replaced the fuse in the circuit to match my demand. (Old fuse 40 amp circuit) We have been on the boat for a week today and the connection is reliable and cool to the touch.

Short answer. Don't change out the boat plugs. Change the cord end to match and by a new cord for your car etc.
