In the market for a new R21, but have recently come across a 2009 in mint condition. Curious to know what are the differences between the two ?
Any difference between the Volvo or the Yanmar?

Thanks
Peter

My 2015 is at the dealer now, some differences are:
The rain gutter does not run into the cockpit, they modified the mold so the cabin roof drains over the side. A very big advantage.
The 2015 has a cockpit table, and it is a fine looking piece of wood!
The cockpit railing is one piece and the attachment is different (not sure how that will affect the boat yet)
The thruster controls are on the side by the throttle.
The swim platform is larger that the 2009.
The mast and light are forward and tip to the front
Factory can add LED lights to the cabin
Others may have some other items

I appreciate the input..Do you know what year things where updated?

Table was 2014 with the Volvo and the change to the cabin mould was 2015. In my mind this fix alone was worth the purchase of a 2015. I will be getting full canvas for the cockpit so with the roof draining to the side the cockpit will stay as dry as possible in a rain. We plan on using the boat to cruise in for 5-6 weeks each summer. Most nights at anchor.
There also seems to be various stoves they install. 2015 is an alcohol stove. Also the GPS plotter is typically the latest from Garmin.

I'd have to say, for some people, the change of the drain from the cabin top to the side of the cabin is significant. Especially for those who are going to enclose the cockpit for use in bad weather, and those who leave their tug out uncovered. Leaving the tug out in the weather can result in a problem if the bilge pump is overcome by massive amounts of rain, or the scuppers get clogged. Another situation can occur when the weather is freezing, yet rain is still falling; the scuppers can freeze over causing the cockpit to take on water.

I've owned both Volvo and Yanmar diesels in several boats. To me they're a tossup. Both are excellent pieces of machinery.

The rest of the differences are superficial. They built a great little boat with small changes as they went along.

I guess ...got to take out a few more dollars..and go with a new 2015..i really appreciate everyones input and look foward to getting her out on the South Shore of Long Island!! Plus the wife likes the bigger swim platform.

Thanks again

Peter

I'm not completely familiar with the r21 but when I was shopping around I really liked the electronic throttle controls vs. cables. Much better engine response/rpm control (this was a big deal for me as I was always adjusting cable tension/pulleys) on my previous boats. Good luck with purchase.
