1. What was the original battery brand that was used on the 2011 R27?

2. What are the battery specifications for all four batteries on a 2011 R27 with Yanmar 180?
(2 house, 1 thruster, 1 start)

Thanks!!

My 2011 R27 with the yanmar 4BY2-180 had 4 Interstate deep cycle group 31 AGM batteries( not sure if they were factory installed) that I replaced with four Leoche (international mfgr) group 27 AGM batteries. I went with the group 27's to reduce some of the weight in the port stern quarter. Amp hours of the group 27's is close to the group 31's and with proper battery charging, they should provide all the battery support I need on my tug.

I do a lot of trailering, and some of the roads are not the smoothest. I was concerned with all the vibration and gyrations with the batteries in the aft portions of the vessel and the trailer wheels in the middle, sort of bouncing the batteries, so I elected to use AGM batteries, 31 fit nicely, but the list is still there, so perhaps the 27 group may work. But the key is to figure your electricity use, then choose. I put my heavy tool box in the forward Starboard locker under the bunk. It helped, but I keep adding stuff that always counters my best intentions. 😳

My R-27 came with Group 27 and that is what I have continued to use. I go deep cycle flooded, $87.00 0r so at Walmart.

Hello TomHall,

1.) At the time your boat was build we had two options. Standard was a group 27 lead acid, the upgrade which could have been selected was a group 31 AGM.

2.) bank 1=engine with one battery, bank 2=house with two batteries, and bank 3=thruster with one battery

Thanks everyone for your input.
Very helpful!

Any idea on the specs for replacement house batteries?

  • Capacity
    Cold Cranking Amps
    Reserve Capacity

My group 27;s are 12v 105 AH each. Two house in parallel, one for thruster and one for start. I went with four identical deep cycle so I could swap positions around if needed. The deep cycle meets cca requirements for the start battery. At one year post install, I've had no problem, even after one serious deep discharge event on house bank - caused by charger failure.
