My plan is to pull as much oil with a pump from the dipstick port first. Then remove the drain plug because there is no room to capture any meaningful amount of oil below the drain plug (same for the filter element). Is this what others are doing?

Thanks,

I’m not sure what transmission is in the R29. If it is the Volvo HS63A (same as ZF 63A), which is on my R31 (with the D4-300), here is the procedure from the service manual. It was straightforward. You don’t need to use the drain plug. You’ll can get the lion’s share of the oil out with the pump.

After cleaning around the oil filter and dipstick area to ensure no dirt contamination into the openings:
1. Remove the oil filter.
2. Draw the oil out through the dipstick or oil filter hole, or drain it through the plug.
3. Lube the gasket surface on the new filter with a thin coat of oil.
4. Install the new oil filter.
5. Fill with new oil.
6. Start the engine and run at 1500 rpm for a few minutes.
7. Stop the engine and check the oil again.
8. Top up as necessary.

Hope that helps!
