Hi all,

Went to use hot water, foul, rotten, metallic smell noted ( not noted with cold water)- water heats after a short run and the engine gets to temp, however, with the boat on shore power, no hot water, green light is illuminated on breaker, foul smell persists despite multiple flushes etc... Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Sounds like a burned out heating element. Not terribly difficult to replace. Just need to find the right one for your model water heater.
The most common cause of burn out is having it on without water in the water heater.

Not sure what heater you have, but there is usually a reset button on the unit which may periodically trip. On the Seaward you have to remove the front panel to get to it. As for the foul smell. I make it a habit to drain the tank when I have an extended layup. It makes a big difference when recommissioning.

If installed the sacrificial anode can give off a rotten egg smell. Some have the anode installed some don’t. I have elected not to have one because of the potential odor caused by hydrogen sulfide gas, The tank installed in my C26 the anode was installed at the drain valve location.

You have 2 problems.

1. Heater not working on AC power.

2. Hydrogen sulfide smell.

1. Check the voltage on the output side of the CB, check the resistance of the electrical element.

2. This is a result a poor quality water (low or no chlorine residual or presence of bacteria) combined with the action of the anode. To remove the smell you'll need to add about 1/4 pint of hydrogen peroxide for every 10 gallons of water. Let the solution sit for 12 hours then rinse thoroughly.

If the anode is very worn, it may be possible to use an aluminum anode instead of magnesium, they react slower.
