I'm looking at a new 2013 Chevy 2500HD diesel and the dealer doesn't know if the factory brake controller works with electric over hydraulic brakes. I've searched the topic... but some say yes, and some say no. Does anyone know for sure?

Phil,

My 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Diesel 4x4 has the factory brake controller which works just fine with my 2011 Float-On (model 1231-ABB) trailer with electric over hydraulic disc brakes. I can't say about your 2013 model year. I suggest that you talk directly with your trailer maker about what works. In my case in 2011 when researching this question, I talked directly with the owner of Float-On trailer about this to know for sure what would work.

Thanks Dale. I also have a Float On trailer...I'll call them.

Phil

It will work because the break controller on the trailer receives the variable voltage sent from the truck controller and applies the breaks. Truck only sends the variable voltage signal, it does not care if wheel break coils are receiving it or the coil in the break controller.

Thanks Todd. I've been towing with a 2008 Chevy with an after market controller....I recall there was a problem at the time with the Chevy controller.

My 2012 factory did not work with Venture trailer elec over hydr. Had to have another installed. Mine was 2500 Silverado.

I guess I'll find out when I plug it in. Float On says it should work....although they have no record of the vin # of my trailer.....very elusive stuff. Marc at Wefings must be building knock offs of the Float On trailers 🙂

I just purchased a new, 2013 Chevy 2500HD with the Duramax diesel and with the integrated trailer brake control system. The manual includes the following:" Warning- Connecting a trailer that has a surge, air, or electric over hydraulic trailer brake system may result in reduced or complete loss of trailer braking. There may be an increase in stopping distance or trailer instability which could result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle, trailer, or other property. Use the ITBC system only with electric brakes." Does anyone have first hand experience with this model year truck and electric over hydraulic brakes?

Phil

You need to talk to Float-on or you brake unit provider because it all depends on what brake unit you are using on the trailer. On my 2011 there is a special electrical unit add on so that the controller is compatible with the Carlisle unit I have.

Hi Mike,
I spoke with Float On and didn't get a clear answer...have to call them again. I have the Carlisle unit on my trailer also, and have a call in to them. Where did you get the special electrical unit add on?

Phil

Phil,
Carlisle is pretty responsive. I am pretty sure the assist unit is HBA-CAM 381-7063. This may be different for the 2013. Carlisle will be your best source for information. The unit should be mounted on the side of the trailer near the Brake unit if you have one already.

Problem solved...I finally checked my trailer (in storage, not readily accessible) and found that it already has the Carlisle HBA-CAM 381-7063 Ford/ Chevy adapter installed, so I'm good to go.
