The aft bilge pump on my 2013 R29 stopped working this spring.
When I use the manual switch it trips the circuit breaker. I suspect the pump is seized or clogged.
It's the original pump a Johnson with a removable cartridge I think. Because it's difficult to access I want to find out exactly
How the cartridge is removed? It looks as if it is simply a twist but is there a screw that locks it?
My plan is to buy a new cartridge before I try to remove the old one that I can keep as a spare if I can salvage the old one.

What is the capacity of the pump and do you have the correct part number for a cartridge.
Any other tips regarding cleaning and maintaining the pump and sensor will be appreciated.

I would be reluctant to give you may part number because the r-27 may be different than the 29. There is a small tab that has to be pulled away from the cartridge housing to be able to twist it out. You should remove cartridge regularly to clean the impeller. Also a good idea to check that area of the bilge for debris, hair and dust that loves to work its way there. If you also have the water sensor you may want to get a spare. They have been known to fail and sometimes the pump will keep running and burn out. If you don't need it, having a spare could be handy at sometime.

Hello Dave,

The above response is correct. There is a tab that releases the pump and then you are able to twist out the pump for service or repair. You can order new from parts@rangertugs.com. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Update: the Johnson pump cartridge is 100GPH
It was seized but was easy to free up with a bit of penetrating oil and now works fine. I thought the Ultima sensor had failed because the pump now worked fine from the override switch on the 12 volt panel but the two finger test on the sensor or submersing it in water did not turn the pump on Before replacing a sensor first check fuses near the thruster battery switch. There are two. One for each bilge pump. Sure enough one was blown. Bingo! Sensor works and every thing is functioning as it should. So when it arrives I will have a spare sensor as well. I located the sensor for the high water alarm while I was thinking about bilge pumps. It is another ultima sensor identical to the ones that attach to the bilge pumps but is attached to the bulkhead forward of the engine near to the main sea water pump and belts. The two finger test on the two circles on the sensor sets of the alarm on the dash if all is ok.

The lesson is that a seized pump will trip the 12v switch breaker AND take out the sensor fuze if it is triggered by water in the bilge.
A bad sensor will NOT and the override switch should Run the pump.

Cheers.

That should read 1000GPH

Glad to hear all worked out. It is important to occasionally clean the surface on the sensor with simple green to remove any greasy film.
