2014 R27 people capacity

How many people can the 2014 R27 safely carry. Assume full fuel and water tanks, dinghy on the stern and small kicker on board

It is up to the captain and the conditions. There is no reg. I have no problem with 8 adults and 4 small children for an easy cruise in calm waters. I wouldn’t cross a major strait with more than 6 adults total but that’s just me.

Thanks Curt. Do you notice any adverse handling characteristics with 6 people? Ie sits now in the water, handles sluggishly, rolls on sharp turns, etc? Might take 7 adults on a pretty calm day cruise but I’m always conservative when carrying people. I’ve never carried more than 4 passengers total so I’m trying to anticipate before increasing that payload

Yes, to all of the above handling issues. The more people, the lower in the water, the more sluggish, and the more roll. The numbers I gave are the maximum I’m I am comfortable with managing, they do have an impact but not necessarily enough impact to make it a no go. The effects are completely manageable in safe conditions. If the conditions are not safe we don’t go. I worry a lot more about the weather and water conditions than the number of people on the boat (up to the reasonable limits stated)

If your boat does not have a capacity plate, the U.S. Coast Guard recommends the following formula for calculating maximum occupancy: multiply the boat’s length times its width and divide by 15. For example, a 6-foot wide, 18-foot boat can carry up to seven people safely. they also mention each person at roughly 150 lbs.

I am applying for a new MMSI number and on the form it asks for the capacity of people on board. I found on the Coast Guard site a formula (length x Beam)/15. It just seems like that is a lot of people for an R29. (29 x 10)/15=19 people.

As long as one states a capacity lower than the official formula, I don't expect anyone would care. I would answer with however many I would want to take as a maximum (which might be 8 or 10, similar to Curt).

I’ve heard that one many times and it is a good rule of thumb for R27 Classic comfort.

I’ve had four adults and a toddler sleeping on my R27 Classic. That’s as many as is workable for us for a couple nights.

For cruising in benign waters, eight adults is doable if cockpit seating is used.

I am not at my boat but through search some have a plate mounted that lists the capacity. I know what’s comfortable on our R29 my problem is I am trying to fill out the form to the FCC and want to get it right.

If I understand correctly, a capacity plate is not required for yacht certified vessels over 20'. I think the authorities care mostly about commercial vessels, airplanes (who use some of the same forms and radio permits -- and where there is a BIG difference about max seats depending on the pilot's certification and medical) and of course boats under 20'.

The formula of W*B / 15 is standard although also absurdly high for our boats IMO. I'd just choose a number lower than that which is also more than the max I'd ever board. Don't recall what I decided for our C30 when I did the form, but today I would say 15 (more than I'd ever carry but well under the computed max!)

Let's see, 6 cockpit, 2 swimstep, 3 salon, 2 stateroom, 2 cave, 1 head ... that leaves 3 more for the bow. Seems legit! 🙂

Registered and paid for my new MMSI number will see how long it takes before I get it so I can have the person from Wave Point Marine make the changes on my radio.
