2018 R-29CB Autopilot Controller reads only dashes

Hello all,

I took the boat out a few days ago, and all was running normal. I reached down to engage heading hold, and the boat started a significant turn away from our current heading. I disengaged autopilot and looked at the AP controller--it read three dashes only, no numbers. I stopped the boat, powered off chart plotter and AP controller and restarted them. AP controller still come sup dashes only. If I engage it, it changes to 360 degree course and tries to turn the boat for that heading, but seems to keep turning in circles essentially. The chart plotter was working fine as far as GPS signal, heading, correct map orientation/position, etc. Any suggestions as to where I need to start looking? I read through the forums here for the past hour and see plenty of questions about headings not matching up and calibrating compass, etc., but it seems like this issue is different. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Sorry, but I cannot find anything in my documentation or on a couple of other web sites that describe your problem. I can only suggest you try https://support.garmin.com/en-US/ (sorry I originally had Simrad troubleshooting instead of Garmin)

Hi there, the AP has a setting for ‘contiguous circle’. I have e gaged that by accident several times. It’s meant for fishing I think and the boat will literally do a wide slow circle. Not sure why that would engage but mine has at times when I hit the wrong buttons and then need to go back into the main menu button to clear everything. Btw - on your other post regarding constant steering adjustmen needed all the time. Power off the AP and see if that remains an issue.

For anyone following, this has been resolved. It was Ranger customer service who handled it. I called Garmin and they had no idea what the issue was. RT Cust Svs asked me to remove all power from the boat (house batteries off, shore power disconnected, etc), to force reset/reboot the CCU and it worked great. Powered all back up and voilà…heading into! Of course, it was off by a fair margin, so I took the boat out, ran compass calibration and defining North again and all is well. Heading hold works great, as does autopilot now. Still have the check valve issue when not using autopilot, but should have that resolved soon as well. Thanks all!
