2019 R23 electrical panel

Just purchased an R23 and we love it. All systems seem to work well but I do have a question about the proper use of the electrical panel. When on shore power, with the top left breaker on, I can get all my 110 V things working, But when I remove my shore power power cord, turn off the top breaker, slide the breaker safety up and go to inverter, nothing works.

The most common step people miss is the remote inverter switch. Always make sure you have good volts on the meter after turning on the inverter breaker and remote switch.

On my 2019, my panel does not have a remote inverter switch. Now what? Is it hidden somewhere?

If you check out this image (https://briandunnington.com/img/boat/ba ... nitor2.jpg), the inverter switch is the uppermost switch on the right (labelled KISAE). This is on my 2018 R23. If you dont have a switch like that - are you sure you have an inverter? Perhaps it was optional equipment that was not opted for?

@jhammel62 - Are you certain that you have an inverter? The inverter was an option on previous year models (it is now standard equipment on the new boats I believe) so maybe your boat doesnt even have the inverter? (I see that you dont have the solar monitor/panel or Webasto heat thermostat either). I think the same AC panel is used, so it would still have the toggle for the inverter even if it was not installed. That would explain why you have no remote switch and why nothing works when you toggle to it.

Well, it turns out that the boat was ordered without an inverter. Seems very short sighted to me. Any thoughts on adding one after the fact?

Everyone has a list of things they want on a boat and we all know there’s no perfect boat. Additionally we all use our boats differently. We have a 2018 R-23 and generally use our boat in Southern waters. We don’t have an inverter and for how we use our boat we don’t need one. If we need to use the hot water heater, the air conditioner or the microwave while on the hook we just crank up our Honda generator. In our environment an inverter is not realistic because the battery bank wouldn’t support any of these comforts for any length of time. My point is this. Take a look at how you’re going to use your boat then decide if you need an inverter. We’ve had a blast on our boat without one but that’s us.

Since you do not currently have an inverter,watching the Ranger Tug video called Power Management will help you decide if an inverter would give you functions you really need. While we tend to use power hungry appliances like water heaters,microwaves,grills,and air conditioning and such on shore power, they are very limited on inverter and draw batteries down quickly. If you spend a lot of time on the hook, perhaps a portable gen would be your preferred option.

In our experience on our 2018 R23, we probably could have saved $ and not ordered the inverter. Paying that much to use the microwave for 30 seconds hasn't been worth it to us.

We went the portable generator route, but also have the inverter. They compliment each other. I’m sitting at anchor on Elvin Ray right now with a couple of fans running and may crank up the A/C in a bit. Microwave dinner planned. Run off the inverter until later today, then run the generator to recharge the batteries for overnight.

Just to add my 2 cents, I have seen a lot of RT owners use the Honda 2000 series. Some have creative Gen boxes mounted on the swim platform. When you use the portable generator, you also have to use the ground plug to avoid getting the reverse polarity light. I bought one on Amazon. I use the Harbor Freight predator series 2000 on my 23. It’s half the cost of the Honda with virtually the same specs. Research this forum and you will see a lot of great info on portable generators. -Craig
