Hello folks. I was out this weekend and noticed that when turning on the water in the galley, the pump pulsates. If I open both faucets simultaneously (galley and v-berth sinks), the pulsating stops. I'd like to check the fresh water filter but cannot locate it. In the R-23 manual, the only reference is a picture on a diagram. I looked in the cabinet space under the galley sink and didn't see it. Do I have to remove the frig? Cheers! -Norm

Actually, the pulsating is 'normal'. That's not to say it isn't somewhat irritating. But the fact that it pulsates means that your filter is allowing sufficient water to pass through.

This is assuming that the pulsating stops when the faucet(s) are turned off.

The pulse is the pump kicking on to pressurize the system (which, on our little Tugs is a pretty small system). Then, once it hits its predetermined pressure, the pressure switch is triggered and the pump kicks off. The pump has a higher flow than a single faucet - which has numerous flow restrictors - can let by, so the pump very quickly reaches its pressure setting, which turns it off. If the faucet still on, the pump has to turn back on to keep the flow going. This happens a couple times per second, thus our "pulse".

If your filter was plugged, the pump would not get sufficient water to pressurize the system, and would constantly stay on, with little to no water flowing through the faucet.

I believe others have found pumps that are more suited to our system, and there are other threads about this. I, however, think I will first try installing an expansion tank (if I can find a small one - 1/2 gallon or so) in the system so the pulse will be minimized. The expansion tank will allow the pump a larger place in which to "store" the extra pressure, thus the pump cycle will be much slower.

Thanks, Brian, I appreciate the insight. Can you tell me how to access the filter. This is something good to know in case I ever encounter a clog issue. I've read a few posts of plastic shavings stopping up the fresh water system at some point. Cheers. -Norm

You can find it under the floorboard under the sink.

Awesome, thanks! -Norm

FWIW... this is one of the expansion tanks I was thinking of getting. It'll probably change the pulse frequency from a couple times per second, to once every few seconds with a slightly longer pump run.

Might have to check with the pump mfgr to see what the cutout pressure is so I can properly set the pressure in the expansion tank... but once it's dialed in, should do the trick.

Slowing the 'pulse' will help the pump live longer (cycling on/off is hard on pumps), and help save my sanity

Thanks again Brian. If you install one, please let us know how you like it, what improvements it made. Cheers! -Norm
