I figured someone would need to know how to remove the mast cap of a R-27 OB at some point so i wanted to share what it looks like under it. i really wouldn't recommend doing this unless absolutely necessary as it is a pain.

you need to get under the cap in order to remove the mast as it is held onto the cap by nuts and bolts. To remove it you need to remove the side screws and cut away the caulking. then you need to basically pry it up from there so two prybars and some rags really help. The horn wires are very short so they will need to be cut then reattached when you reinstall the mast cap.

Hopefully this helps if anyone is looking to remove the cap for any reason.

Thanks for sharing.

What was your reason for needing to the remove the cap?

I have a spring project to add cellular / wifi antenna to the mast and running the wires inside. Do you think I will need to run remove the cap? I hope that luck, patience, and a good fish-tape, I'll be able to bring them into the center-teak-teak at the top of the cabin directly underneath the cap.

TIA,
john

The reason my mast cap was off was for warranty work. The welds on my mast failed so I the cap had to be removed to get the baseplate off the mast cap so it could be rewelded and strengthened. I did run an extra wire to power a gopro to the mast while I was at it but I don’t think you could fit anymore wires into the gromet that gets the wires outside of the boat. I’m not sure of its technical name.

If you were going to run a wire up to the mast you would have a much easier time if you ran the wire out of the fake funnel, then up to the mast from there. it is hollow and easy to access the inside of from the indoor wooden board under it.

I am going to be running a cell booster as well but am thinking of mounting it to the top of the funnel or possibly on the top rails near the solar panel and VHF antenna.
