I'm looking to purchase a 1995 Classic 21 with a 27HP Yanmar. I can pick it up for 16K, but NADA shows this boats value at only $8745. Am I entering something wrong, or is the NADA not accurate for these boats?

The NADA is wildly inaccurate.

Is there any other way besides NADA to determine the value of this boat? The boat is in really good condition for a 1995 model. it'll be my first Ranger Tug purchase. I'll be using it just to cruise the local ICW.

16K is a decent price for a 95 R21 in good shape. NADA has never been a good source for pricing on used boats.
Like anything else, market determines price and the R21s are popular boats.

Just for information you might check check . http://www.yachtworld.com/ It's a dealer's site and their prices are always negotiable but it will give you a good look at price ranges.

Enjoy your 21. They're a great boat.

.. a lot depends on hours, and what it comes with .. trailer ? camper top or bimini ? radio etc etc .. Rob

The R21 comes with a galvanized trailer, GPS, AM/FM Disc player, full cockpit cover, cushions on rear seat, rear steering, Nice V-berth covered cushions, and nice full boat cover. Yanmar 27 HP has 950 hrs. on it, for 16K. Has bottom paint, and looks like it has been taken well care of. Man is getting rid of it due to health reasons.

Did the 1995 Classic 21 come with rear steering, or was this a factory custom add on?

That's a good deal. If I was still looking for an R-21, and knowing now what I know about pricing, I'd be all over that.

Seems to me a good deal. The rear steering has me puzzled as I've never heard of the option for the R-21. Are you saying it has steering in the cabin and in the rear/stern area ?

FYI....
A new R-21 trailer is priced today at around $5K
A full cockpit cover + full enclosure panels is priced today at around $5K
Bottom paint is at least $1K today

The steering on the R21 is cable, and the cable before going to the rudder, is linked into a smaller brass wheel with wood handles. I't on the starboard side right ahead of the rear seat. It runs parallel to the gunwale. It's about 12 to 14 inches in diameter. When you turn it, it also turns the wheel in the cabin, and visa versa. The guy selling it said he sat back there and steer the boat using his foot. It does look factory, and not an add on.

Oh.... that rear steering with the foot is sooooo cooooool. 😎

.. sounds like you had better go for the test ride !!

I had a 2001 classic and it did not have any kind of rear steering, just the common push-pull cable steering from the helm.

That’s a good price...you won’t be sorry. 🙂

Dealers tell me all the time NADA can not be trusted. I believe them to an extent because a) the exact options are not specific to each boat (just generalizations). And b) supply and demand/popularity is not accounted for.

i still used the low NADA quote for my R-21EC as a negotiating benchmark when I bought it...but ultimately the comps ended up being my best bargaining chip.

Don't want to open a Pandora's box here but Ranger Tugs are (for good reason) more expensive than you want them to be. Use this opportunity to get a good deal on a great boat!

Does anyone have a used swim platform, or know where one is for sale, for a R21 Classic. Any suggestions on a used one, or who could make me one would be appreciated.

Cockpit steering I'm sure was a aftermarket, I installed a unit on my R 21EC you can see results in my photo album (total price was about $750-$1000)

I've got a 1995 R21 Classic, and I'm attempting to replace the cutlass bearing. Does anyone know if I have to remove the rudder to accomplish this task? If so, what's the best way to do this. I loosened the top steering linkage bolt, but still will not drop down. Any adult supervision will be greatly appreciated....
