I thought I had posted this before but couldn't find it so here it is,,,again maybe.
To remove the cartridge from the pump you need to pry the little black tab near the top out a bit. You can pry it out and push it down. It only moves down a bit, sometimes it stays, sometimes it slips back up and back in its slot. In any case it need to be out to release the cartridge. After the tab is out of the slot just rotate the cartridge counter clockwise and lift it out.
If you want to remove the base as well, mine is held down by a couple of screws, one in an outside tab and one in the centre of the base which of course you can only see and remove when the cartridge is out.
Not a lot of room below the shaft but on mine it does come out. I have replaced mine a couple of times.
The one in the photos is just a spare that I made up with small clamps that I could quickly swap in and connect directly to the battery should the need arise. I also have a hose Tee'd into the raw water suction line. Should the need arise I can drop the hose in the bilge, throttle the sea cock and suck out the bilge. Hopefully never have to use it but it's there as an option.
