Has anybody installed a autopilot on the 21 and if so which brand and how does it works

I have the Raymarine S1G installed. It is hydraulically driven system (we changed out the mechanical steering for hydraulic). It runs via an st6002 control head and uses a fluxgate compass mounted forward for very good accuracy. It was rather expensive way to go relative to some other options but the systems works very well and is virtually silent.
There are more economical (and very good systems) such as the Raymarine sportpilot and the s1000 GPS based system. There are lots of options; you just need to decide what it is you want out of a system.

Cheers

I am still searching for answers to this same question. I was hoping that someone had experience with the Raymarine Sport Pilot, since this seems the most cost effective for the R-21. Is anyone aware of this being tried?

hey nutters, notaclue here and back homw with CHRISTINA BEE safely ensconced in the boat house. good to see you johnie k while south on I five. a quick storry on auto pilots.. the bee has a raymarine st6002 who's display panel went south on me up in the gulf islands. as it turns out actually manning the helm of one's boat isn"t that bad. upon getting back to cap sante i had the local electrical gurus come look at the boat to ascertain that it waS THE DISPLAY and not the actual auto pilot. well, for the mear price of two dead presidents [plus tax] it turns out that i was correct.. they are sending the display back to raymarine and we are hoping they will swap it out for a new one. however, i have been told to not hold my breath, as raymarine is in the process of being bought out by garmin.. untill i get a responce [about 3 weeks] we won't know if raymarine is a stand up guy or not. i already know that johnson pumps could give a sh-t about standing behind their products. will let you tugnuts know the result as soon as i get it. this is a 2 year old unit that costs about 7 bones to replace....later, still no clue :?

Ahoy Gumshoe,
I don't have first hand experience with the Sport Pilot. But I do know they are installed on many sailboats and the word is that most skippers are very happy with them. The sport Pilot can be used on either power or sail. I'm not sure if Raymarine still makes them though. If you get one, let us know how it works out. I thought I'd get one when the time comes.

capncarp,

Hey Guys I have a sport pilot that has been in use since 1998 and it works great. Steers a better course than you
can by hand.
