HI Gang,

My 2016 21EC is not sending data from the Volvo to the Garmin 741xs. We went out for a couple hours yesterday and I noticed when switching to "Gauge" view on the Garmin there was no data at all.

The boat only has 12 total hours and after the first 6 hours had the engine replaced because of the Volvo emissions recall. I'm assuming everything worked properly when delivered from the factory, but have no way of actually knowing.

Can anyone give me an idea where I should look to begin diagnosing this problem?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Mark

Are you sure you have the NMEA 2000 interface on your boat to allow for that function? I know it wasn’t offered on the 2015 and thought that one of the members (Baz) had it added at the factory on his 2016 (which I understood was one of the first or only because of his request). Could be wrong... Here’s a cut and paste of his previous thread when we were wondering about the NMEA 2000 system on the R21’s...

I can't say for sure what changes were made for 2016. What I can say is

1) The water run-off channels on either side of the Pilot House roof are now turned outwards at their end points to allow water to fall off the side rather than into the cockpit area. This same change has been made for the other RT models.

2) Some minor movement of accessories such as the toggle switch for the bow thruster to side of the Garmin MFD, cigarette lighter receptacle located to front of side of throttle console facing the V-berth.

3) Alcohol stove vs. butane stove

4) More options (style and colors) for Bimini and side enclosures

5) With the Volvo Penta D1 engine it's possible to install the Volvo NMEA 2K Gateway so that engine Coolant temp, Oil pressure, RPMs, Battery voltage can be monitored on the Garmin MFD. It will also allow controls for the VHF radio and the Fusion radio.

6) Maybe more color choices for the hull and pilot house eye brows.

7) Raymarine Autopilot no longer an option. If you want one it is a DIY project (see above for how I'm dealing with this).

I'm guessing answering this first would be the perfect starting point for diagnosing the problem. Thanks!

After a quick email to Andrew he confirmed that the 21EC does not come with N2K connectivity from the factory. I think one of my first projects will be to order the N2K interface for the VP as I would like a little more data from the engine.

Thanks everyone! We LOVE our RT.

Anyone know what a rough cost for the N2K interface plus install would be for the VP? I have a 2014 and would love the extra information that it would provide.

Would that be a DIY job or would it require taking it in to the dealer?

Thanks

From what I remember, it was a few grand. Our dealer had never installed one and it seemed like it was going to be quite the ordeal. FWIW, I know Comox has an awesome Volvo Penta service place (I can find the name if you don’t have a really good shop).

Thanks for the info Sheral. I just wanted a ballpark cost and it appears that it isn't a DIY so if I go ahead I would get Port Boathouse to do it.

Thanks again and hope you are getting to enjoy your 21!
