I have a 2014 Ranger Tug 25SC that needs an engine rebuild or replacement. It currently has a Volvo Penta and due to many factors, I have been thinking about repowering with a Yanmar. I would like to know from owners of RT25s with Yanmar engines how their experience has been with reliability, cost to maintain, availability of parts and information availability on the engine. Also, I would be especially interested in those with a 110 hp Yanmar how satisfied you are with the handling & performance of your boat.

Thanks in advanced... Dick

I have a Ranger 25, 2006 with the Yanmar 125 hp. Cruize at 7-10 kts. Great engine, much lower cost to maintain and parts are available world wide.
Captain Norm

I’m happy with our 2009 Yanmar 4BY2-150 diesel. Yes, access to some components on the engine is very difficult. But in 1,000 hours our biggest problem has been with a recalled oil hose and some “professional Yanmar certified mechanics” who really didn’t know what they were doing.
In 2017 Yanmar replaced its 4BY2-150 inboard engines with a new line designated the 4LY150. The 4LV line runs from 150 hp to 250 hp. I’ve seen the 4LV150 priced at about $9,100 shipped. Not sure you could find a new 4BY2 model anymore. The 4LV engine is supposedly a bit smaller in dimensions than the 4BY2 and meets the new emissions requirements.
In general it’s my opinion that Yanmar parts are easier to get and less expensive than VP parts.

PS: The new 4LV models are based on the Toyota 2.8L turbo intercooled direct injection diesel. The old 4BY2 was based on a BMW diesel. All 4LV models are available with hydraulic multi-clutch gear boxes with either an eight degree down-angle at the output flange and three different reduction ratios or a 12 degree V-drive having four sets of ratios.

Do your research to make sure you have the height in the compartment and the location of mounts. I would definitely go with higher horsepower of 150. From my conversations and buddy boating experience the 110 hp is a slow boat. Yanmar stopped making the 4BY. If the 4LY150 fits I would go that route. It is made by Toyota. In my opinion both companies speak the same language and there are fewer issues. My experience has also been that the Yanmar parts are more readily available and less expensive than Volvo, Also Yanmar has less of a hold on the end user and their on phone help and response is far superior.

Thanks, Captain Norm and Vicki & Al, good information.

Knotflying,

Thanks for the response and yes, we are looking at the 4LY series. However, I am not sure what will fit and the 4LY is heavier than the VP D3. We seem to have a unique RT25SC since the VP D3 does not fit properly in our boat. I posted a few years ago about an engine alignment problem that caused a premature failure of the cutlass bearing and the shaft rubbing on the inside of the stuffing box. To get proper alignment of the prop shaft and engine, the engine had to raised 1/2 inch and the engine top plate and cowling needed to be removed in order to close the engine hatch. This alignment problem we found in the original factory installation may have contributed to what I am now facing, an engine rebuild or a new engine. How did I get here, initial engine alignment that may have contributed to the transmission failure and on water tow that ingested water into the engine?

i am looking to replace the OBS Cummins Mercruiser that is not rebuildable with extreme parts cost. I know yanmar engines and was wondering what direction you went with your repower?

I believe I inadvertantly sent my message incorrectley?
