Unlike all the other ranger models, the newer 29 dashboard has a lot of extra unused space. Has anyone considered making use of this area?

Some ideas:
  • add a second chartplotter
  • add a mount for an ipad or other tablet
  • create shelf for holding paper charts
  • add a barometer and some other retro gauges
I am extremely hesitant to drill into the vinyl, so I was considering using suction cups attached to the fiberglass in front of the dash to drape an ipad holder of some sort over the empty space.

Just curious if anyone has tried this or has any other ideas for creative use of the space.

I like your idea of an IPad mount. We don't have such a space on our R27 but I did add a stand for my iPad on top of the dash. I think it would be really useful to have it in that space on the R29S.

We added an iPad holder and run a second nav app with Active Captain overlay. Works great. Drilled the vinyl and upholstered an iPad-size board with matching leatherette from the factory to "hold the place" when the iPad is removed.

You have a command bridge with the new electronics so you could mount an iPad and connect to the upper chart plotter and use that as your second display.

thanks Andrew! Mirroring the bridge chartplotter with an iPad sounds like the perfect option.

Do you have an opinion about the best method of attaching an iPad to the dash? I'm a little reluctant to try anything permanent unless I'm confident it's going to work long term.

We have an R-29S 2016. We had the factory install a second Garman Monitor in that space. We can view our chart plotter and all navigational information on one screen and Radar, Depth Finder, and all engine information on the other screen. These are the choses we chose, however how one programs the screen is almost unending. As ours are set up it allows constant cross check with the Volvo Screen and the Auto Pilot. The cost of the additional Screen is minimal compared to the feeling on security it provides.

A nice place for a larger screen for a new rear facing camera.

Here you go Craig. I don't recall the cost as it was part of our package. I would contact Andrew at Ranger for a quote.

Move the VHF up to where you can see it and cover the old VHF space with a small panel. I did this on my R31CB. Email me at stanstumbo@comcast.net and I will send you a photo of the installation.

I have a Cutwater 28 with a very similar dash. I mounted an iPad Pro in this location and I love it. I looked at various mounts and even bought one set and was not satisfied.
I made my own mount with an aluminum channel from Home Depot. I cut out openings for all the buttons with a drill and dremel. I powder coated the aluminum black. It works great. With the cover on the iPad and a little back pressure from the padded dash it holds perfectly. Drilling the dash was no problem but I ran the drill in reverse to get through the leather so it would not grab. Check Behind the dash carefully. There are a lot of things mounted on the back side that don't show to the front.
If interested I have a video that shows it well but I don't know how to attach it here. Or will get under my boat cover and get some detailed photos. Send me a reply or pm and I will be happy to call or e-mail you the video.
