I have not installed a mechanical shaft seal on my Cutwater. I have replaced several stuffing box (packing seal) with packingless shaft seals (PSS). When ordering a seal, I first take all the dimensions of the seal location in the boat. Spacing length, spacing width, shaft DIA. dimension, stern tube (log) DIA dimension. I take the seal drawing provided from the seal manufacturer with me when measuring to visualize the installation. Making sure I can fit the seal in place and service it when needed. Most manufactures have all this information on line. I have thought about installing a PSS but I have not had any issues with the factory installed packing gland. I have 320hr's and have not made an adjustment yet. Preventative maintenance, proper shaft alignment, straight shaft, cutlass bearing inspections and proper technique of tightening packing gland will provide good service (packing seal). All of these service requirements are needed for PSS too except for snugging up the packing gland. The biggest advantage of the PSS is a dry bilge. Unfortunately I don't think this is possible with a Cutwater. I believe I get more water in my bilge from the deck drain design then I do from the packing.
