3M 4200

Would 3M 4200 be good for fastening small plywood strips to fiberglass? I need to make some brackets for the fire extinguishers but I'd like to avoid drilling holes where possible.

Whenever I need to attach something and I am not sure what is behind or how long a screw I can use I would use epoxy. A fire extinguisher is pretty heavy for 4200 in my opinion

I agree the 4200 will likely not hold long term. You could use it however as a temporary solution until you are confident in the location. After you are sure you can pull it off an use screws or epoxy for a permanent attachment.

If you are mounting it to be permanent.I would use 3m 5200 . It takes 48 hours to dry and 7 days to fully cure . 0nce cured it will not come off .

5200 will not come off ever. your boat will disintegrate before that 5200 fitting comes loose.

Be aware that 5200 comes in tow cure rates and two colors. There is a fast cure and a regular cure. There is a white and there is a black. Whenever you use 5200 it will be a permanent bond where the material bonded will generally fail before the bond.Before cured it can be cleaned up with acetone or MEK if I remember correctly. It is relatively expensive for a small tube and once the tube is opened there is a shelf life.

When I mounted a fire extinguisher, I asked the factory manager where boat was built and he told me exactly what was behind the panel--in my case, thick plywood. So, no problem drilling pilot holes for screws.
