A Northwest Ranger Rendezvous?

Kim and Tim,
You are added to the list.

Sparky,
The reservation has been bumped up to thirty vessels as of Friday, (thanks for looking out for us...)

Captd
I have decided to launch right down the hill from the Ranger Tug Factory on Thursday. When were you planning on picking up yours and putting it in the water. Jeff has said I could store my trailer and truck at his place while gone. If you are going to launch on Thursday, we can coordinate and go together.

Gil and Barry,
Look for the Hampton Inn as you approach the naval base. The marine is right in front of it. Enter at the far end closest to the ferry dock. If you call ahead on VHF Channel 71 for Solitude (this goes for everyone) we will guide you in and assist you with getting tied up (if you retie your lines, I understand...)

All,
It looks like we are going to go over the top with more than 30 vessels! Bremerton Marina is very excited as this is the biggest gathering they have had! They will get us all in no matter what! Can we make it to forty? How about fifty?

I like the sound of that deal. That is going to be my plan. Leaving here on Monday and heading straight for the factory.

More info:

I talked a Port of Bremerton spokesman today and she said Ranger Rendezvous places are reserved along the south breakwater, as well as individual slips on the P dock. I asked her what it would cost for my R-21 EC and she said $12.60/night along the breakwater and $26/night is a slip on the P dock.

She also suggested that I launch at the Port Orchard marina since it has free parking.

I'll be there Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and look forward to meeting the assembled masses of the Ranger Tug family.

Cheers,

Johnnie the K

CaptD,

If your going to come with Lucky Fin, Highly recommend driving down through tacoma, follow Hwy 16 to Hwy 3 (bremerton) continue north to Hwy 303 (Silverdale) You will get off the freeway at silverdale and head east, Left turn at the 1st light about 2 miles or so from the exit. The return will cost about $10. About a 1/4 of the ferry cost and it will actually be quicker!

Here is the Lat/Long-Lat and Long: 47°39.10'N 122°36.65'W

Hope that helps. If you need further info feel free to holler!

Friday night Zuma will be hosting hor d'oeuvres and sangria.... it's exciting to see all the boats coming to the rendezvous. We had the pleasure of meeting Peter from Sporty II in Sucia last Saturday... it's a fine looking boat Peter! Can't wait to meet other Tugnutians....

Yup, we are coming with the Lucky Fin. But will leave Tuesday. because Monday is Laborday and factory is closed. ( my guess)

Andrew, I hope you are reading this and make a note. I will be there late tuesday evening. before you close.

Drew, what do you think of the launch right down from the factory? I might be assuming to much, I got to check with Jeff to see if I can park truck and trailer.

captd 😀

Darrell,

The run from redondo north around vashon and through Rich Passage is roughly about a 1.5hr trip. Not bad at all and you avoid the toll or the ferry. Honest truth is that unless you want your rig close by...Launching from Kent/Desmoines/Redondo is a way better idea!

Alternate may be launching from Point Defiance in Tacoma. I can probably talk with Tacoma Yacht club and get permission to store rigs in the very secure parking lot there. Down side is that adds maybe an hour to the trip.

Just some thoughts!

Good Luck and safe travels....

Drew

I'm still a bit confused -- There's

1) Bremerton Marina Port of Bremerton
and
2) Bremerton Marina

Number 1) is adjacent to Ferry dock which is adjacent to the PS Naval Yard.

Number 2) is across Sinclair Inlet to the south (which seems to be Port Orchard) ????

From what you've posted it seems we are meeting at 1) as that is where the Hampton Inn is located. Is this correct?

Gil and Barry,
You are correct. The rendezvous will be held at the marina next to the ferry dock. I am on the road this week but once I get home I will scan the charts of the area and post them on a thread.

to all of my tugnut brethren north of anacortes--- the Christina BEE will be leaving anacortes on sat , sept 5, to make the run south to des moines marina via desolation pass.. any company or advice would be greatly appreciated for as we all know,, i got no clue, steve and first mate tommy,[ until Tina gets in tuesday ] 😀

Here's a relatively current aerial shot of the Port of Bremerton Marina. The Google maps satellite picture doesn't show the completed docks. More than one boater has recommended arriving at or near slack.

From Active Captain:

Approach
There are 2 entrances to the Port. The north entrance is for permanant moorage and the South entrance is for the guest docks. There is no pass thru from one side to the other once inside the breakwater. The Bremerton/Seattle ferry dock is just to the South of the marina and mariners must obey the security zone restrictions. The USCG does not take kindly to violators.

Tide and current
Max current: moderate
Additional info: Moderate to strong is the best description of the current. I would not be surprised to see 3kts at max current. At least 2 boats got caught in it during opening weekend. Both of the boats ended up in crunches. No serious damage. One of the skippers was experienced, the other was not.

Depth (at low water)
Additional info: No fuel dock here use Port Orchard Marina across the bay.

Position
Latitude: 47°33.773'N
Longitude: 122°37.407'W

Christina Bee......I assume you meant you would be going through Deception Pass not Desolation Pass. If you do go through Deception Pass go on a Slack Tide. Why don't you just go through the Swinomish Slough? It's easy, well marked and then head south for Des Moines. Try to hit Possession Sound at slack tide also. It can be rough with the tide coming through Admiralty Inlet. You are leaving plenty early so if winds and tide are questionable lay over in Langley,a neat little town on Whidbey Is. Once you are south of Whidbey it should be an easy cruise to Des Moines. Gary (Harbor Ranger)

NOTACLUE---I heartily agree with Harbor Ranger. There are many things you must take into consideration. First is that the run from here to Des Moines should take about ten hours if you average eight knots. Another item to consider is that we have had heavy morning fog this past week that has not cleared until around noon. There are a number of routes that you can take but each would depend on the conditions. All my books are on the boat, so I can't give you any specifics here tonight. Idealy we would sit down and have a chart session when you get to Anacortes. Unfortunately we are leaving Friday morning for a family funeral in Oregon. We should be back on Sunday (Sept,6). In the mean time, I will gather as much tide, current, and weather info tommorow and base any suggestions on that. I'll get back to you .

In case this can be of assistance to anyone coming from a more northern direction to the Rendezvous:

Lobo will be overnighting in Friday Harbor on Wednesday Sep 9. We'll be at the end of "C" dock -- just across from the Customs wharf check-in. We will go via Anacortes, Swinomish Channel (love that part of the trip!), and then depending on "weather and whether" we might stop off somewhere for Thursday night, but do hope to complete the trip. I did a hop from DesMoines to Bremerton last summer -- breakfast in DesMoines, lunch and museum tour in Bremerton, then dinner in Port Townsend.

If we get away from Victoria early enough on Wednesday, or if conditions on Haro Straight are good, we might skip Friday Harbor and go to Cap Sante in Anacortes.

My cel phone is 250-661-8603. I'll be monitoring VHF 16.

lobo, auklet, and island ranger, thanks for all the advice. i don;t need to be in desmoines marina untill tues, noon to pick tina up from sea-tac.. we will be heading up the channel to the gulf islands sunday after the rondivue, so i was looking to see some new territory ergo, deception pass.. thanks cary and pat, buy i do have a chartplotter and back up hand held gps, tina is not a big fan of large water so thought if i ever wanted to see the pass that would be the time to do it. i had heard somewhere that it is somewhat a rite of passage for nw cruisers, but i could get talked out of it!! 😱 THANKS AGAIN,, STILL NO YADAYADAYADA

Notaclue --- Yep, already it makes more sense. Looked out my window at 7:00 and there was no fog. Weather reports are calling for light rain showers all weekend. Sounds good, rain USUALLY clears out the fog. But who knows what the reports mean. No guaranties on weather around here.

As to Deception Pass, you have a valid plan. It is more of a right of passage than a necessity. We have been through twice. Didn't need to either time. Depending on when you launch, you might want to go "outside" to Bowman Park and tie up while waiting for the slack. On Saturday, Sept. 5 the max ebb is 7.4 knots at 7:45 am with a slack at 10:59 am. This will give you more than enough daylight to get to Langley or maybe Everett.

Save LaConnor for your trip back up. Makes a wonderful lunch/dinner stop.

Local knowlege for everyone: You probably know to stay out of the VTS. What doesn't show up in guide books is that barge traffic runs just outside the VTS. Once, caught in the fog, I almost learned this the hard way.

Yes, I have no local knowledge. Like what does VTS stand for?
captd 😳

VTS is the Vessel Traffic System, like the Air Traffic Control System for aircraft, run by the Coast Guard (I think).

Charlie

Sorry about that. I guess I assumed too much.
On your chart you will see three lines that look like a highway. This is where the big boys hang out. They like us to cross perpendicular as quickly as possible. It's OK to be in this area as long as no freighters are in sight. But if you see a ship, even on the distant horizon, GET OUT. Some of these ships are going about 30 knots. If you are not paying attention, they can really sneek up on you. If you hear the ship give five short blasts on its horn, make sure that it is not you its warning.
In the Seattle-Bremerton area there is heavy ferry traffic. There are no lines painted on the water but the same rules apply. Just give them all the room they need. If you see one in the narrow part of Rich Passage, slow down and let them clear the area. Even the ferries have been known to crash into one another here.
The best maritime rule is "common sense".
