I’m wanting to get any feedback from fellow Tugnuts who have purchased and have experience with a 110v ac/12v dc cooler. Looking for cold beverage management for our soon to be built R25OB to supplement the standard refrigerator.

We had a Dometic for years on our R-29 and R-31. Worked consistently and efficiently. We always ran it as a 12V appliance. When we'd provision for longer cruises we'd put it in freezer mode and stock it with frozen food. Once we worked through the frozen stuff (mostly vacuum packed entrees cooked at home) we'd put in refrigerator mode for fresh food and beverages.

Cheers,

Bruce

We also used the 40 qt. Engel on a cruise to the Bahamas. On that trip it was used as a freezer. Very efficient and could get down to 0 degrees if you wanted. In the States we used it as a refrigerator. Very satisfied.

BougeRV E50 is a great size for extended trips, dual zone, dual purpose fridge/freezer and comes at a very competive price with good efficiency. I am very impressed with the quality.

We also have the 40qt Engel. Great performance. Keeps everything frozen even when stored in a locker with minimal ventilation. Uses less current than the other brands I checked.

Heads up: A lot of Engel products are sold out. I suspect the need for cold storage of vaccines in non-traditional places where shots are being administered such as stadiums and the like has caused a run on portable cold storage.

My family used a portable Norcold fridge/freezer for more than 25 years while truck camping across the US. Never failed, allowed us to venture far off the beaten path (what everyone calls overlanding now). I flipped it to freeze once, walked away, forgot I did that, and found several exploded Coke cans a few hours later.

I wouldn’t hesitate to have one (from any of the name brand manufacturer’s) if I had the need.

Super happy with my Engel. Use it on the boat, camper and truck. Great for multi stop food shopping in summer. Versatile.

Hi Jim
We bought a Whynter FM-65G 65-Quart Portable from Amazon. They make a 45- Quart as well. https://www.whynter.com/product-categor ... -freezers/ I was surprised looking it up we got it in Nov 2015 off Amazon. These have a compressor and come in different sizes. We use ours as a freezer but it can be a fridge as well. I removed the hinges off the lid for easier access ( We just lift the lid off and it seals good with out the hinges ) We plug in the 12 volt and 120 volt and it just changes automatically. Ours works great for us. It is metal.

Jim,

Patty and I are very happy with the Whynter FM-452SG 45 Quart Slimfit Portable Refrigerator, AC 110V/ DC 12V . We’ve only had it about 4 months... working flawlessly. Very well built. When we received it, I thought it may have been too small, but we are surprised how much it holds. We bought it on Amazon.

Reasons why we chose this model:

Footprint ( also serves as great seat in cave when looking for something)
The way the lid opens
Price point
12v/ 110v

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and recommendations. We ordered a Whitney ac/dc yesterday and was happy to read that you Tom have had good experience with the one you purchased.

I can second the seat option. We had ours in the cockpit for a time and used it as a seat as well. 🙂
