I have a R23 on order
Our new R23 LE has the Wabasto reverse cycle AC unit. We boat in Louisville, Kentucky where its gets quite warm and humid. I like leaving the AC on 24/7 when on shore power. My question is, when away from the boat should I leave the AC on cool at an elevated unoccupied setting or use the dehumidify setting. The dehumidifying setting maintains an excellent comfort level when boarding the boat. But this setting cycles the compressor continuously at 6 minutes on, 4 minutes off with the fan on low. Whereas in cool mode the unit would cycle off for longer periods of time, especially at night. Any opinions on which mode would have less wear and tear on the system?
Thanks
Bob

Bob: Great questions! I have been wondering the same!

Hi Bob:

I'm surprised no one has replied to your excellent question. A couple of weeks ago, I had a question about the finish on interior wood and posted it in the "Ask the Ranger Tug Factory" forum. One of the Ranger Tug team answered the same day (it was a work day rather than a weekend). I suspect that if you were to re-post your question in that forum you'd get the answer we're both looking for.

Al,
OK I'll give that a shot Monday.
Thanks

Hi Bob:

I see you got a couple of answers to your question, one from Jared from the factory and another from Jcat. So what are you thinking now? Run the AC set to a high temp when away from the boat? As you said previously, the AC at least has the chance to not run at night when the outside temp drops below the interior setting.

Yes, that is my plan. I added some insulated foil shading to the skylights. I'm thinking dehumidify mode when away from shore power hoping it may conserve the house bank.

I too have added some of the foil bubble insulation to the overhead hatches by placing the insulation between the screen and the window. Haven't figured out how to add to the skylights without it falling out.

I use to use the dehumidifier setting on the AC but changed over to a tabletop dehumidifier to save wear and tear on the AC. I set the dehumidifier on the counter top, next to the sink, and run the drain hose into the sink. I drilled a small hole into the removable holding tank and secured the hose into the opening using a waterproof sealant/adhesive. Now when I'm finished cruising I flush out the engine, genny and AC with Salt Off and fresh water.
I'm not sure if this is necessary but hopefully it will help my AC last a bit longer with less issues.
