Subject: Accessing AIS info while monitoring 2 VHF channels

I read somewhere (maybe in my VHF 200 manual) a while back that if you have AIS active (and maybe it was ATIS and not AIS) and have configured the VHF 200 radio to monitor 2 channels (say 16 & 68) that the AIS info will be turned off.

I've only just learned about ATIS which is not same as AIS as I understand things.

I make this enquiry as I'm a frequent user of monitoring two VHF channels and will be installing an AIS 300 this week. So the disabling the AIS aspect has caught my attention.

Anyone care to dig into this and explain things ? Thanks... 🙂

Baz,

I have AIS recieve only. I have used dual channel watch and have not experienced AIS turning off during that mode. I am not sure why it would shut down other than the AIS is actually doing a dual watch in the background and thereby is limited if you go dual. Like I said though, I have not had that issue.

ATIS (Automatic Transmitter Identification System) is used to identify who is transmitting - it does not give location; really more of a way for authorities to police VHF usage. Completely different from AIS (Automatic Identification System), which shows who and WHERE you are (as a supplement to marine radar).

Mike: Yes, ATIS in EU seems to be where it's used primarily.
